• NY/NJ to Vegas

We will leave NY/NJ area on or around July 31st. We will get a rental car and drive. No it's not cheap but we think a cross country trip would be fun. We will stop along the way as we see cool stuff along the way. We will be in Vegas in time for toxic BBQ.

It will be about $140 plus gas. If we ake only 1 other person be prepared to chip in for 1/3rd in the very unlikely event we take a van instead of a full size sedan and if the other 3 people agree maybe we will consider taking a 4th person so be prepared to chip in for 1/4th of the rental and gas. Ideally if you and a friend want to go this might work out.

We do want to meet who ever might go with us. Being weird/strange is fine and in fact encouraged but if we are uncomfortable being around you sorry we rather go alone.

Please don't post sob stories we'll just laugh about them next time we drink.

Added: you will be of legal age!!! I do not want to explain to an Arizona state trooper why there is some 15 year old kid from NY in a back of a speeding car going to vegas.

Could be interesting was planning on flying out but a cross country drive could be a good start to the events. Drop me a line back if spot is still open.

What this means for you: You and a friend/boy friend/girl friend that is drama free can get to DEFCON with us for $160 each. I will call this week to see whether or not they will really give us a car for that price and if they realize how many miles we will put on it.

Any correction in my calculations welcome. For those who may potentially travel with us: notice the lack of hotel room and food in the calculations. Yes we will make food stops and stop by convenience stores at gas stations as we fill up. We will also Bring food with us but you are responsible for your own food. We also will not be sharing our hotel room.

Many don't offer "unlimited miles" or restrict "unlimited miles" to the state of rental or specific bordering states. Some will charge out-of-state fees, unlimited miles fees and "out-of-state-unlimted fees." Insurance options often are not advertised, and there is often a greater charge for each additional driver-- something that can bite you later if you have someone else drive and there is an accident or ticket. Few will rent to under 24, and those that do often charge more for 21-23.999 years old, and the very few that rent to 18-20.999 years old charge even more.

I'll call them up and see whether or not that is a rate they'll actually give us. I know enterprise will actually give us the advertised rate and it still comes out to be price affective. Never deal with National before.

Yes it's still open but you don't have any contact info listed. We are waiting to see whos interested and we'll see who makes sense from a practical point of view. We already have 2 other people get a hold of us before you. One of them is someone I vaguelly know and a cop from Long Island.

Having driven from Edmonton to Vegas (1500 miles) several times, I can tell you that it's no picnic. After a while trapped in a car with the same scenery going by, digging shallow holes in the desert starts looking really good.

It's 2500 miles from NYC to Vegas and I can't imagine that. I'd suggest taking a day or 2 longer. Straight through will probobly kill you, and as well, you have to consider the trip back after 3 days of partying. From my trips i can tell you that the return journey is one of the more painful things I've done (Utah incident aside)

Just my $0.02. If you actually make it by vehicle from there, come find me, I'll get you a drink, you'll need it.

Re: NY/NJ to Vegas

last year two of the cats hanging out with me did this. RedX and Fishsticks are both from my neck of the woods and drove all the way, round trip, in (if i recall correctly) a camaro with broken air conditioning. might want to ask them about the experience before doing it yourself.

of course, there is a group of us on the east coast who have been planning for some time to score a used bus from a reclamation yard and outfit it for the cross-country journey to defcon. (maybe every other year we'll make it a one-way trip and fly home from somewhere like CA or WA, letting west coast people use it the following summer to drive to NYC for HOPE.)

it almost seems like a good idea nowadays, what with the sheer amount of hardware (locks, picks, guns, etc) that our group posse ends up travelling with or shipping. if you want to get on that whenever it eventually comes to fruition, i'm sure we can make some room on the mayhem machine for ya. $100 will get you a seat, $150 will get you a seat plus extra gear space, $200 will get you a seat, extra gear space, and access to one of the bunks. maybe we'll have it worked out so that anyone who does some of the driving gets $50 knocked off their ticket price. just guessing on the numbers, the whole thing is still quite a ways off.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

I have done the trip too and as you can see from this: http://tommee.net/Road_Trip_March_2006/
The scenery is really boring. It took me 3 days.

Deviant Ollam: I am one of the people who keeps meaning to do it. I am the guy who was in philosophy class with you. The bus idea is kind of cool but impractical. Very few people hold the permits to drive the bus or would assume the liability. Also it would NOT be cost affective. If you know anyone that wants to get in on the trip with us or is driving and wants to caravan let me know.

You don't have to wait for a response if you:
Advance Search
"Posts Made by: Renderman"
"Containing the word: Utah"
Select forum "Announcements" and "shift-select" the forum "/dev/null" and the click on the search/submit button, and you will find all posts where renderman mentions "Utah".

The story happens in one or two, but discussion about the issue happens in several threads.

Good luck. Search is your friend.

Maybe make it a sticky in the driving thread?
No thanks. Maybe another mod will do it, but we're trying to minimize the numbers of stickies in any forum.
