  • Grill Space...

Well, I am finally making it to this event. Thank you to the organizers for all the work.

I have a question regarding grill space. I see there are park grills at the site, but I am guessing not enough for everyone. Were there any open last year? Is there a way to sign up for one?

I'm guessing I'll have to bring my own, so I was wondering if anyone had any ideas on some cheap "disposable" grills (350-400 sq in) that could be purcahsed locally. I'm seeing some stuff for around $40-$80 online. Keeping it under $50 would be nice considering it a one time use deal.

here are a few options i found...

    Portable Barbeque Grill
$23.59 (i have this exact grill on my back porch. i took the propane element out of it when i first found it at a garage sale and it looks like it's been through a war but the little guy just keeps on heating)

    10" Folding Grill
$4.50 (not nearly as large as you wanted, but price is a jaw dropper)

    Grill-It Kit
$19.99 (this one not only seems to have the best size cooking area, but you also get two free tools, as well)

all in all, i think you'd be able to always find those stamped steel or even stamped aluminum round-shaped semi-disposable grills at a K-Mart or other discount store in any major city. you guys know the ones i mean, perhaps... they have flat metal bars for legs and about 90% of their operating weight comes from the charcoal as opposed to the metal in their construction. at many games, concerts, etc. we've brought them, killed them with an assload of cooking, and left them for some homeless people to take away later as a fireplace.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

When we roll in, we dominate the area and families run in fear. The center of the park has 2? 3? grills that can be utilized, granted.. they are public grills with tables surrounding it. It is like they designed the place just for us.

It sounds like some folks may be bringing some grills, but it wouldn't hurt to get a grill rollcall going.. count folks? At TBBQ1 mfreeck and I picked up a grill for $30 at a semi-nearby Walmart while getting hotel food. iirc, Siviak had brought a grill from somewhere and when all was said and done he gave them to the Parks/Rec guys cleaning up the remainder of what we hadn't taken care of. Not sure what kind of offerings the Sams will have...
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Remember... Wal-Mart "rents" them... (Just be sure to keep the reciept!)

I agree.. a grill roll-call is in order. We usually have two park grills (which are rather large) but they still cause quite the wait. Can some folks commit to bringing one?

          Che, that will be good.

"I want to return this grill."
"Was anything wrong with it, sir?"
"Yes, it is too small for my elk."

I'll commit to bringing a grill.

I'd try the "rental" option, but I don't think I can afford that kind of karma right now! Instead, I'll give it away afterwards to anyone that wants it. It will be a cheapo, but it's that or the dumpster.

Thanks for the links DO, pricing is outstanding, but I think I'm gonna need something bigger. My home grill is over 550 square in, and I found it rather small when doing parties and such.

Right now I'm looking at one of these two...

            $29.96
375 sq in (oooh lookie, a side tray)

            $39.82
            380 sq in

            Think I can live with $30 - $40 for a disposable grill.

If it makes it easier, I'll pay half if you'll let me cook what I buy there on it. I am going to be at the TBBQ but since I am flying in and out, not going to be able to bring food or grill with me.

Don't forget that sometimes it can be a pain in the arse to put the things together.. be sure to bring tools or assemble it beforehand.

If people are looking at getting disposable grills, is it possible someone might be interested in getting one to use exclusively for veg cooking? I'd be more than happy to contribute to that.

                      DaKahuna -

It looks like I'll have about 8 people who wanna use the grill so far, so it looks like I'll be buying two. I'll make space for ya, just buy me a beer!

                      Che -

Yeah, hope my Leatherman will cut it, I'm bringing enough crap!

                      Octal -

If my stuffed peppers didn't have sausage (and wrapped in bacon), I'd leave one grill to veggie only for the first hour or two. Sorry! I'm already buyin' two, don't really want to go for a third.

i'll be bringing the exotic patties but do not have a grill of my own. i'm assuming, however, that there will not be too much difficulty in scrounging some space over a few coals when the chance to taste lesser-consumed animals is up for grabs. anyone who donates room on their grill gets a free sample.

Well, I think I just had some extra space open up!

The Veg-only grill is a great idea imo, but probably needs to be driven by someone personally interested in it to ensure interest. When tried at TBBQ1, no one made use of it and eventually had meat tossed on it, since otherwise it would have gone entirely unused.

Surely there are other folks who would be interested? H1kari? Javantea? I would volunteer, but there's no telling whether I'll make it or if I'll still be slaving.
