CDC, Hacktivism, and their change of Tone at DC9

I think the title explains it all. What do you think about the whole Hacktivism speech given by CDC. Some people loved it, some people hated it. I wasn't there for the whole thing, so I am not going to comment right away.

I mean, their ideas are great, but it just doesn't seem like the CDC. When comparing the DC7, and even DC8 CDC presentations, they are completely diffrent than the DC9 one...

I dont know if we have any CDC people here that would like to comment...

Um... WTF are you talking about?

I don't know what you are talking about... The CDC has always had this view for the most part that I'm aware of. Atleast since the public adoption of the term hactivism.

CDC has always been doing pro-active things from training people in China to bypass content restrictions, to working on PeekaBooty, to just publicly distinguishing between your average web site defacement to real hactivism.

And aparently you didn't listen to what they said during DC 7 for the release of BO2k when they talked about hactivism.

So just to clear things up, you have misspoken.

For anyone who is interested check http://www.hactivist.com/

        where's the show

I welcome the cDc's focus on serious issues, but I wish they had more of the showmanship from the old defcons. The two needn't be mutually exclusive...Think about the BO2k roll out. The intro and ending were filled with lots of crazy energy, but the discussion of BO2K's features was much more sedate. I'd like to see them discuss human rights, but do something fun at the start of the talk. Half the reason for going to a cDc presentation used to be the showmanship, and that has been lacking the last two cons.

So does that mean that you're volunteering to pick up all the raw meat next time? haha

            1) Actually, that would be a good example of why I should have worded my earlier post differently. I should have said there was a lack of *legitimate* showmanship. I had been talking about the southern-baptist impression with a speak and spell, the spinning crosses with cows' heads projected onto the wall, guitars being smashed into computers. Even an original rap like at the Plaza. Those are *much* more interesting than raw meat

            2) I *did* volunteer to help that year. I stopped DT after his talk at the CSI conference in D.C. and asked if he needed volunteers. He said, "We *always* need volunteers." I wrote, "Attended DC 5, 6, & 7. Would like to volunteer for DC8" on the back of my business card and gave it to him. DT never got in touch with me. I emailed him around Feb. 2000 to remind him, and got a terse reply saying I'd be contacted later. That never happened.

I guess I don't know the secret goon handshake, so I don't get to be in the club house. ;-)

              CDC Showmanship Facts

The CDC actually has to pay for anything they want to do. Meaning all those guys spend hundreds of dollars out of their own pockets to put on a show for people. They pay for lights, projectors and anything else they have during the track. Also not to mention all of their merchandise etc.

I would suggest emailing someone at the CDC and asking them where to make a check out to if you want a better show =]

                "New" CDC

The new CDC? I don't think they changed much. What they did at DEFCON 8, was weird and I did not quite understand it. Were they sacraficing the kid or is that kid one of those guys cousin... because they are from Texas.
