Re: Where did your /nick come from?

I've had several screen names throughout the years. My first one was ninja while playing around on the bbs in the mid 80's. I know, I know, not another ninja but at the time I was into the whole ninjitsu thing. About ten years ago, my buddies gave me the name cashmoney because I always had something for sale. Since then the name has stuck but I tend to horde more junk now than sell it.

I work in telecom (hence the telco portion of said nick).

Telco was taken at the time that I registered on the Defcon Forums, so I added some numbers on the end.

Re: Where did your /nick come from?

Back in the early days of the commerical internet I looked for an alternative to the handle I was using in the late 80's on the Chicago BBS'. After a little research on handles under eight characters I settled on erehwon (nowhere spelled backwards). It made the best sense as I have always had real interest in conducting business anonymously with added the benefit of strong cryptography, and I figured the internet would permit me to do so...

Finally with a MacGregor 65, Toughbook, PGP, Nera WorldPro 1000, a privacy minded datacenter, and e-gold, its all possible.

Re: Where did your /nick come from?

chomp. no real mystery or cool story here. wasn't exactly old enough or knowledgable enough back in the BBS days to care about an alias .. a misc pool of usernames sufficed to keep me logged into one of 10 or so local systems at any given time. 15 free minutes here, 20 free minutes there .. keeps a guy entertained for most out-of-school free time. proceeding through trials of aol, prodigy, compuserve et al began the path towards the Internet, where eventually chat clients and sites were common to request a moniker of sorts.

since, I have created and infused many variations within many interests .. most of which are entirely unused today. around the time I began gaining interest in defcon and related, c0nv3r9 came up as a numerical variation to 'converge' .. based on the concept of convergence, it could have been applied in a technical/networking or social sense .. being relatively isolated from most group activity in the frigid state of Maine. even at the time it was a commonly taken alias, hence the awkward numbers that no one could ever completely figure out or pronounce (my favorite still being 'conver 9' by ms. octalpus). to correct this I shifted to just 'converge' and thanks to then admin blackwave got my account on the forums updated and have remained since then.

i can't say that I'm particularly fond of the alias .. or any alias that I've concocted for that matter. as blackwave then pointed it, it is pretty much what folks associated to my presence; in the scope of interaction, it really doesn't matter if there are 20 or 200 other 'converge' entities (or bands from Mass.) because .. well, in my scope I'm known by those that need to associate it to me, whether typing my rot as c0n_, converge` or any other variation.

it really does not serve as a point of privacy for me, since much of my logged locations and correspondences will easily tie the nick to my federally registered livelihood. it really doesn't matter to me, many of my friends on the tar-web including these and other forums know my real name anyways. privacy is sufficient to me on an as-needed basis.
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Re: Where did your /nick come from?

I got my nickname from a group of old friends, my old handle that was given to me during high school was X-Istence, without me the computers in the building were nothing, and the name stuck. It was not until later that people decided X-Istence was too long to say out loud, and to type it was even longer, they dubbed me 0x58. Which in hex on the ASCII table is an uppercase X. When spoken to, it is x - 5 - 8.

As for a way to hide behind the nickname? Nah not really, my real name is easy to find. I just needed something else to be known by, while with a group of friends.

Re: Where did your /nick come from?

My username patsprou is simply a combination of my first and last name, my real nick name is ROCKETMAN I'd rather not share why that became my "handle" because it might ruin my reputation (not that I've really established one yet.)

Re: Where did your /nick come from?

Lessee.. I have a great affinity for cats, so thought one of the big cats would be a good name. Since I weighed 210 lbs, the same as a full grown male cougar. Since Cougar and Panther was already taken, I decided to go with Panthera. Part of the Latin name of Cougar, Panthera Pardus. (No NOT THE band! Pantera, I was first BTW)

This was like 1988, on this BBS Viewline or Vline.. it was a one line BBS I think. Over the years I've tried a couple others but they never stuck or I couldn't get anyone else to use them. Also, when I was running the streets as a streetkid punk, I was using Panthera. Once a name sticks on the streets, really nothing can take it off.. Even a business suit. It was fun explaining to my white collar stuck up boss why the cute goth street kid begging for change ran up, calling me "Pan," gave me a kiss and wanted to know where the hell I've been and when's my next hot tub party. Busted..

The Reason none of the other aliases stuck:

Y'see I also got stuck with a nick of my nick. Pan or Panties.. I got in a flamewar online with the girl Wolfgang.. I called her Wolf-gangbang after her casual sexual activities. She responded Panties.. I was enraged and well.. y'know how much people like to press buttons that work. After a while it became a blessing and a curse.

Do you know how many girls want to know EXACTLY why someone is called panties.. I've made up so many stories I should publish a book. There are some problems with Panties tho. It is very difficult to explain to your brand new girlfriend why 4 girls run up to you screaming "Panties" and quickly lunge into your arms. No honey.. I don't know them that well.. and no.. not in the biblical sense either.. (Hours can pass...)

In any case, I was later called All Beast.. which is a direct translation of Pan-Thera so when my alias is taken online I appended 666 to the end.. heh.. number of the beast. Easy to remember and few Christians will use it.. Usually it's free.

That's the story, or at least an overview.

                Cheers,
                Panthera

Re: Where did your /nick come from?

Way back about 5 years ago...I needed a screen name for some reason or other, so in a flash of brilliance I took my first name (Floyd) added the initial of my last name (r) then added to that my age at the time (47) and came up with the nick Floydr47. Pure genius, eh? Sometimes I am in awe of myself...

Re: Where did your /nick come from?

A few years ago (probably in 2000 or 2001) I was trying to think up a screename for Battle.net Starcraft. There was a Gamepro magazine next to me and I started looking through the editors' pen names. One of them was Tokyo Drifter. I thought that was a kickass name but didn't want to directly rip it off, so voila... I became Samurai Drifter. Before that I'd been Quiddler, as well as probably a couple of other names, but Samurai Drifter just fit (particularly in the anime fandom, where I've spent most of my time online since then).

You have my sympathy. One of the courses I'm taking currently in college is Fundamentals of UNIX, and man do we have a field day with SuSE. I won't get into details, but after inserting the System Recovery disk and creating/re-sizing partitions the professor had to re-install the OS on every single one of the class's HDs.

I just took the word 'moniker' as another name for 'name' - and i'm a bit of a hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy fan, hence the numbers

In my particular case, I was always a pain in the ass when it came to picking a movie to watch at friends gatherings (guess, 'Sneakers'), and once someone told me I was more paranoid than Mother from the movie...so the nick kinda stuck. It also seemed nice to get people confused, when they find out I'm actually male.

It's curious that in some cult hacker movies, the characters don't even have a nick, for example, Matthew Broderick in Wargames.

HA...I was wondering if it was from there or from Trainspotting!

And agreed on the Wargames reference.

On this forum, my nickname came from a fascination with the country Croatia. Browsing the internet and came across this peculiar name. Just coined it as my forum nickname. I only acknowleged this nickname whilst i was very young, to which nowaday's i go by my full name.
