  • Suggestions for a padlock?

I'm going to move some of my things to a public storage space since I totally just dont have enough room!....

I was curious what your suggestions are for a lock to guard it!

    let me know!

I would recommend something with a shrouded shackle. The risk of your lock getting cut is far greater than picked, so just protecting the shackle is a really good step.

If you need a really serious security option, look to Medeco's line of padlocks, but they'll cost you dearly.

As well, take notice of the hasp that is on the storage locker. If that's weak, investing in the great lock is pretty useless. Hopefully the storage company protects and monitors their storage area.

    Cheers,

db hit all the hot points on the money there... as for hasps, if you're really lucky you may find that the door assembly will accept a Sargent & Greenleaf 830-series. (they don't tend to fit well on average, civilian hardware, though)

also decent are some of the high-end offerings from Abus/Abloy. I've always liked the Granit series (scroll down on that page to see the closed shackle / "booted" models) since they are well made and difficulty to pick without custom tools. (btw... that's just one random vendor i linked to, may be better prices elsewhere.)

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

        Re: Suggestions for a padlock?

the hasp is the thing that the lock fits through, correct?

If I seriously wanted into a room, I'd rent the room next door and break through the wall. They are usually just concrete brick anyway.

You can never make something perfectly safe. But a good lock will make it difficult for somebody to just opportunistically steal stuff, and instead have to actually spend money renting rooms and taking more time/equipment to break through the wall. Anybody who's willing to break through a wall to get your stuff isn't going to be stoppable with a lock anyways.

Keep in mind the most you can really do is make your stuff a bigger pain in the arse than the ones next to it. If someone has the time, desire, and oppertunity, they _WILL_ get into something like that. Just about any shrouded shackle or shackless padlock is going to be a pain in the arse of the common theif, making them go for lower hanging fruit. Are they pickable? Sure. But likely they are not going to be skilled criminal masterminds, they are going to be crackheads with a pair of bolt cutters wanting to cut and run.

What ever became of those MAG-LOCKS from years back. Those were unpickable.

Although a better lock seems to counter-productive at Defcon as the target then becomes the lock itself.

a good sledgehammer will get you everywhere, I agree! My stuff is being moved to storage, i have twin circular locks, and I am going to put a live Yeti in for security.

I want a lock secure enough to keep everything in my Pelican case safe from those shify baggage handlers who've mastered bumping...

three ways to resist bump attacks...

                        1. use a lock with auxiliary mechanisms in addition to regular pin tumblers (i.e. - side bars, sliders, finger pins, etc. e.g. - medeco, schalge primus, scorpion)

                        2. use a lock with no pin tumblers (i.e. - a rotating disk lock or a non-crappy dial combination lock. e.g. - Abus/Abloy padlocks, S&G 8077A)

                        3. find one of the (rather rare) traditional pin tumbler locks that incorporate anti-bump mechanisms (i.e. - trap pins, shallow drilling. e.g. - Mitchel & Collin Antiklop, Carl Eduard Schulte VA5 & VB7)

note - many of the above lock designs are not often incorporated into padlocks. off the top of my head, the following are used in padlocks which could secure your pelican case:
*abus/abloy (i like the granit and diskus series)
*S&G 8077A (this is the current DoD rated lock for filing cabinets, i believe)
*medeco (they make their own padlocks, which are amazing, and also their cores are incorporated into super top-end products like the S&G 830 series munitions lock)
