  • Blocking images

I know that you've all said that the images I see are random, but it seems like it's always the same ones. Unfortunately, the one I'm *most* tired of seeing is the crotch shot of the statue, which is *always* there on the "random" side, no matter what else is there, whenever I am viewing my own images. I would like the ability to make the gallery work/child safe, and having this image constantly show up makes it hard. It isn't as though it's the whole statue, either. The shot makes it unequivocally salacious.

Will it ever be an option? I'd just like to be able to choose to block particular images; I'm not asking that they be blocked for others.

I'm not able to duplicate this problems where the random picture selections never change.
For at least several days, we've had multiple random images displayed on the first page, on the left side.
When you view that page, you see all images are of this same image repeated over-and-over for each of the 6 slots?
Does the image you dislike move at all?

This plays into an issue being discussed by mods on policy of pics on how we should deal with pictures of naked people, or "adult content." We're looking at: not allowed, limited by usergroup, allowed anywhere with a notice of "18/21 or older" and variations of these.

Please post your thoughts about how you think it should be done:
Censorship (outright disallowing of "adult" defcon pictures), restricted spaces, Open access with age notice (maybe require membership to view all images ?)

I have no answer at this time. User-controlled, per-image, "banning," is not supported, and probably won't be supported. As for what will exist? that depends on the mods.

Whatever we come up with, we'll probably treat them like the rules in the forums, so we can change them to maximize participation, and minimize [legal|asshat|spam|abuse] and related problems.

These decisions will hopefully be complete around the time that we get mail support in pics working. At that point, pics will have a minimum level of features to support going, "live," and complete policies/rules would certainly help people know what to expect, and what is expected of them.

I think the notice of 18/21 or older is appropriate.

Censorship should be avoided and I really like the idea of limiting the viewiew of all images to registered members.

Lucky you. I wish we could trade profiles, then.

For at least several days, we've had multiple random images displayed on the first page, on the left side.
It isn't on the first page, it's on the page I see when I select the "My Photos" option. It's always been there. It certainly keeps me from going there very often, but I got smacked in the face with it when I recently uploaded an older photo of Priest.

When you view that page, you see all images are of this same image repeated over-and-over for each of the 6 slots?

No. I was happy to see the multiple images, at first, because I thought that would rid me of this, but it's always the third of six images, even though the others change. It seems rather a cruel joke, considering how much I don't like it.

I like this, and would prefer the adult content or nudity labels, rather than 18/21 or older. I don't care if you allow it, I just want to choose not to see it. I prefer the option of personal freedom, but I want to have the freedom to *not* see nudity (one that's being currently denied).

See, there's one that doesn't help me at all. I disagree with Dakahuna on this; I don't care at all whether someone's a member, but being a member ought not to push you into the sees everything group. I've always noted that most defcon photos seem to be about debauchery than about defcon content, but that may just be a function of who posts links to pictures rather than the average photographer.

I didn't really hope that this would occur; I'm just so tired of that statue shot.

There you go. My reason for wanting to restrict what I see is not any of those. I don't see a lot of participation on the the picture site anyway, not after the first round of excitement. I'm pretty close to abandoning it myself (I had quit looking, since nothing was changing, and then found that old photo of Priest).

That explains some of the lack of new pictures. Really, I think that you'll find a 18/21 restriction will separate people in a different direction than I'd hope for (i.e. it'll just attract kids). Perhaps you could just use a "Work Friendly" label, which would restrict the kinds of pictures that I don't want to see anyway, while not providing that feeling of censorship that most (including myself) would prefer to avoid.

It isn't on the first page, it's on the page I see when I select the "My Photos" option.
I'll try testing a few other test accounts to see if the "My Photos" page provides similar results for them too.

I like this idea for the label, but would want to change it to, "include non-worksafe images" instead of "only worksafe images" because one is something that can't be guaranteed, while the other one can be. (Latency between time image is discovered, and image is moved.)

We've not started the process of linking to it from other places yet. It's only been announced on the forums. Once pics is available during con, and linked from the main site and other well known sites, I think it will be more popular.
Once we have a minimum level of suport, we can start linking to it and announce it elsewhere.

If I am unable to duplicate this with some other profiles I have, would you mind it if I borrowed your profile? This will require that I temporarily reset your password and email address to something else, and after I'm done, I'd reset your email address back, and you'd have to request your password to be reset. If you agree to this, I would set a day and time for a test, and let you know.

Yep. I like your idea of a different title from "adult content," which could attract more images like that.
I'll bring this idea to the mods too.

          Thanks!

            Re: Blocking images

First off, I should note that the subscribe to thread feature seems to be slightly broken. It works just fine on other threads, but on this one, which I started, I get nothing. I'd have gotten back sooner if I'd known that there was a response.

I'd prefer just emailing you the password (after I set it to something else), at some mutually agreed upon time, and then you can let me know when you're through. It's just a forum, after all, and I trust you.

Email is going to work a lot better than the forum, however. I'm going to unsubscribe from the thread, and then resubscribe, to see whether that will get me the notifications that I'd expect it to.

I can't be certain this is the case, but if you are logged in when a post is made, and happen to visit something else on the forums after a post is made to a subscribed thread, then I don't think you get notifications of changes. For example, if you are looking at "Who's online" which auto-reloads on its own, the system may view you as continuously online and not notify you of updates to subscribed threads.

Additionally, I don't think you get additional notices about other threads that may have changed once you get at least one notice (in email) that a new post has been made to one of your subscribed threads.

That will work just fine. I thik I might have time on Monday or Tuesday, but I am busy at work and with overtime through the weekend.

OK. I'll contact you via email to make arrangements to borrow your account, and see if I can duplicate what you see.

              Thanks!

No problem. It turns out that when I'd subscribed, the option to not notify was turned on (that may be the default). THe moment I resubscribed, that fixed it (as you see). I'll be waiting for the email.
