I thought to myself, "Okay I am hiring the first person who has a small modicum of respect." The rest were no better. I had a new list made, and that took a while.

If one person wore a suit, showered, looked sharp, shook my hand firmly and even looked me right in the eye when he said, "I don't know how to do that (2nd part of that answer is 'but I will find out.)" I would have hired on the spot.

If you can spell (1337 does not count), have a resume on halfway decent paper, show up on time, with a suit, be clean, and do not expect me to by you lunch, you are already in the top 25%. Why not do that?
I have to agree with Astell. Even though my chosen field is manual labor, my job entails much more. Every day I am working with young people in the 18-30 age group who have never set foot in the oilfield before. It is my job to keep these "worms" alive long enough that they actually learn something that they can pass along to the next generation of 'worms". In the IT field if you make a mistake you can always go back and fix it, in my field if a mistake is made someone is either badly injured or killed or valuable equipment is rendered useless resulting in down time for the drilling rig and loss of revenue.

I also do resumes for people occasionally, on the side. I ask them to fill out a standard job application so that I have something to work with. Some of the applications I receive are terrible. These applications come from people who are supposed to have high school diplomas or college degrees. I deal with barely legible handwritting, next to no information as to previous employment or experience, and down right sloppiness.

If you wish to have a successful interview take time to learn about the company you are applying to. This in itself will give you a clue as how to dress for the interview and will give you an edge in that you can discuss the company and the company's business intelligently with the interviewer. Make sure that you remain attentive and enthusiastic during the interview. Be loose, stiff and formal are a dead giveaway of fear, nervousness, and uncertainty. If an idea is presented during the interview that you don't understand, ask questions, this shows an interest in the company and a willingness to learn.

I hire and fire people everyday (I am one of those "asshole straw bosses"), I can usually tell if a man is interested in his job or "just there for the paycheck". It is my position that if a man isn't there to benefit the company then he is just dead weight and needs to move on to someplace he would be happier. The company is in business to make money. Remember, you are there to sell your skills to the buyer (employer), the job interview is your opportunity to make your sales presentation, other prospective candidates are trying to sell their skills....you have to be the better salesman.
I enjoy talking to myself...it's usually the only intelligent conversations I get to have.

I really appreciate all the responses
I wore a collared shirt and tie. I thought I looked pretty sharp :P
the interview went pretty well. I'm going back tomorrow to speak with the owner.
i'll be doing the same thing there that I do where I work now basically. I'm the IT guy that does everything. except it's a larger company with a little travel involved. the pay isn't great though. I think they were interested in my with my limited experience out of college so they could get me cheap.
anyway they need someone who can start right away and my schedule may conflict a tad with that so I may end up turning it down anyway.

Well, I don't have advice of my own on this, but I would like to add a question. I am also going to an interview tomorrow. The job is for a microsystems analyst. From the description, it sounds like user support. I have never applied to a college for any type of work, so I'm unfamiliar to how I should dress for the interview. Suit and tie??

If you read back through the posts in this thread, I think you'll get an idea of the recommendations. With a nice suit and tie you can't go wrong, even if it is overdressing a bit.

Sounds like you made round 2 of the interview process.

If you have another shirt and tie combo, use it for round 2. Don't dress down yet, even if it looks as if you may be able to once you start.

It never is when you start, just in case it does not work out. It is not uncommon to see 200-400% raises in five years with some positions. They all start out with pay to rival running the shake machine at McDonald's. Persistence, tenacity, and reliability will get you far!

I think you may be too concerned on your attire and not concerned enough on yourself. Make sure you know the answers to any and every question they may ask you. Have a good looking, professional resume ready for them. But most importantly, the way you act is what will make or break you. Be confident, make eye contact, and don't become nervous during the process. I believe these things will be taken note of more than your dress. That being said, that doesn't mean you can look like a slob! Follow the advice others have given in this thread and you will be successful if it is meant to be for you.

Re: got an interview tomorrow (weird question)

I'm not sure if I'll take this job if they offer it
it's a contract position and he's talking about if I leave before my contract I end up having to pay back money or something.
                  that sounds odd to me.
he's talking probably low to mid 30k's with maybe health benefits
i am desperate for experience so I may have to grab it if they offer but I'm not sure

Unless you have some solid prospects of employment...and I mean really solid...take the job. Experience is what you need and what will make your next job a higher paying one.

well I have a part time job as an admin for now and health benefits are VERY important to me. especially if it's a lower paying job. I can't afford to come out of my own pocket for benefits.

I somehow talked my dad into getting me two suits for Christmas so I should be set for any future interviews. I now have a grey suit and a navy suit. :P
thanks again for all the advice

Congratulations and good luck! I'm sure you'll be able to parlay this job into something more lucrative in the future.
