OK, time to start my movie collection. I've got some idea where to start. Maybe toss in Monty Python and The Holy Grail, Caddy Shack, and Hitchhikers Guide to The Universe, but where to after that? Suggestions please.

Colossus: The Forbin Project is one of the scariest fucking movies I've ever seen in my entire life

Might as well throw Metropolis (the Fritz Lang version) in there too

I'm drawing a blank, but this should be at least included at Defcon...

        3000 Miles to Graceland

Go had a scene that took place inside the Riviera too. Like, where the dude was at the wedding chapel they have, and picked up two of the bridesmaids, then fucked them and lit his hotel room on fire

            Yes!

Metropolis : This was re-released around 2001, when they tried to recompile as many of the salvagable "missing" film segments as possible, and digitally clean them up. This film originally appeared (in 1927) with 210 minutes, but over the years, various people have made their own cuts of the film, and scenes have been lost through time. The 2001 re-release was about 150 minutes long, and had several scenes I never saw before, including some really experimental POV shots that predate most everything else we now see.

Check out listings of films that were supposed to be shown at DC14 until the hotel became paranoid: http://www.defcontv.org/
I think there was some discussion on root compromise, but now I don't see their forums. Maybe I am not searching hard enough, or maybe they've been zapped.

We also have threads about movies discussed on the forums. (search from google and with the forums' search engine.)

"23 - Nichts ist so wie es scheint" based on same real-life story as "The KGB, the Computer and Me"
            "GATTACA" defeating the system
"The KGB, the Computer and Me (PBS show)
"Horse Feathers" : What's the password? Swordfish.
            "North by Northwest" : Paranoia/Conspiracy
            "The Manchurian Candidate"
"Dark City" Individual vs. establishment -- Like the Matrix, but without Matrix special effects, but IMO, a better story.
"UHF" 'Wheeel of FISH! ... Whatsa in-da-box? ... Nusssing? Nusssing!? STUPID! SOOOO STUPID!' there are a number of lines from this film that have been quoted by techies.
"Sabotage" hiding information, message passing, espionage, terrorism.
            "Matchstick Men" con games
"The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" One of the early books on Perl from Oreily and Associates includes multiple references to this movie in code examples.

            "Hacker" films (heh-heh)
            "V for Vendetta" (Yes. Swords.)
"Goodfellas" (more of a slicing, or stabbing motion than a hacking motion.)
"The Color of Money" con artists ==? 'hack'
"The Sting" (Not many people know there was a The Sting II but there is a reason for that.) con artists ==? 'hack' and for the Sting II, back actor ==? 'hack'
"I Kina spiser de hunde" (Import. Subtitled -- "In China they Eat Dogs") Violent comedy-drama. (I think someone gets chopped up and put in the ground.) Independent of this, I seem to recall that knives are used in the kitchen. However, this is probably more cuting than hacking.

Nowhere have I seen mention of Orwell's "1984". Excellent film, better book. Also, as far as books go, Robert Heinlein's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress" (1966), was one of my favorites while in high school and I always believed that it should have been made into a movie.

For those who have time to read classic sci-fi, I highly recommend this book.

I still haven't seen the V movie, but after hearing they got rid of Fate (the AI computer system which ran their post-nuclear holocaust fascist society) I didn't really want to see it.

And why hasn't anyone mentioned Real Genius yet?

                        Primer

"A 2004 independent film written, directed, produced by and starring Shane Carruth. A sci-fi puzzle thriller, it explores the effects of an accidental invention on its two creators.

The film is unusual in that Carruth, a former engineer who immersed himself in the study of physics while writing the screenplay, makes little effort to explain or "dumb down" the physics theory-laden conversations of the protagonists.[1] He also does not explicitly spell out what is happening in the film nor exactly what the device the young inventors create does, leading one reviewer to claim that "Anybody who claims they fully understand what's going on in Primer after seeing it just once is either a savant or a liar.""

How could we forget "Primer" that we screened at DEF CON?

New Rose Hotel - based on the Gibbson short story

I've been watching on cable the series from the early 2000's "Total Recall: 2070" and while the CG effects are older, it is actually quite good. Definately ahead of its time.
