was a rather poor interview, in my opinion. but that's often the case wherever he appears now. sadly, almost 100% of his public statements hammer the same points over and over and over...
1. microsoft products are good for you and fun to use
2. microsoft will be in control of the future and is "cutting edge" when it comes to "giving users what they want"
3. microsoft has vision to forsee what's coming up and they'll be the ones to make it happen
of course, if you really look within bill's words, this is what their underlying themes are...
1. microsoft products are the only ones you'll need and you're a foolish retard to want anything else. no citations or figures are necessary to support our claims, just buy our shit.
2. we will take day-long meetings with industry executives and decide, according to their wishes, how content and technology will interact... then we will ram these new locks and controls down users' throats by means of forced upgrades, planned obsolesence, and new proprietary codecs/data types that will refuse to be backwards compatible.
3. the future consists 100% of dedicating the whole of the internet to the web, and of making the web as much like lame-ass TV as possible.
what aggravates me almost as much as this horrid, hegemonic corporate business model, however, is the vapid and dippy way in which bill talks about technology. love him or hate him, he's bill fucking gates, for god's sake... he has been riding the crest of the personal computing wave since it started. that's gotta be cool and thrilling, no matter how you feel about what he's done in that position. when jon stewart asked him "now, did you forsee the computer revolution way back when" or something to that effect, he basically fumbled around and gave an answer that could be shortened down to "computers are neat because they do things... they will do more in the future than they do now and that'll be neat when that happens. you'll likely have to get up off your ass even less in the future thanks to computers"
anyone who is truly passionate about technology could answer such questions very simply: "no... we had no idea that technology would become what it has... and we're continually stunned everyday at what continues to develop. we're privileged to be a part of it and we will try to keep pace and keep on bringing people more opportunities and more freedom"
that's the answer i'd give. i think those of us in this community, who truly understand technology and what it means for the world, might answer similarly.
bill gates, on the other hand, just wants you to know that your remote control will make the magical talking box in your living room do newer, stupider shit. (as long as it's approved by our corporate overlords)
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want." - Trent Reznor
I don't believe for one second that Gates is genuinely motivated by technology for technology's sake. His modus operandi has always been to dumb down the average user in order to gradually sell them more "user-friendly" software. Gates is simply cashing in on planned obsolescence.
