Re: DEF CON 15 Floor Plan Usage

A few thoughts after last year:

    * I taught a breakout session in the middle of the contest area- we literally sat on the floor for the bot build breakout- The problem I see is that if breakouts that are 'impromptu' are not in an area with major traffic, that they might not go off well- I recruited 20 people pretty quickly for the bot build because of the flow in the contest area-

    * The contest area needs to be set up to facilitate spectators - This is what drives them, people actually seeing them!

    More later-

Yes, those viewing the lockpicking really crowded out everyone else.

Yeah, well, LoST's contest was MUCH more successful than I could have ever hoped for.... so I'll be keeping this type of thing in mind from here on out. My problem is that I have 4 very large and very cool contests in that room. All the smaller contests have to compete now. The Robot Wars, aCTF, Lockpick, and Lost are the big boys now. The War Drive contest hasn't had as many participants in the last couple of years, so I'm less concerned about that one unless they add bluetooth or RFID contests as well, at which point I think we'll spike again.

Spectators... well, that's a tough one. Our last year at the AP we tried using a digital video camera to display the contests up on the wall for Robot Wars. That seemed to work just fine. Plus, we had the digital video to put up on the web afterwards, too. If I can get the scheduling right, we can probably do something like that again this year.

Re: DEF CON 15 Floor Plan Usage

This year we have some more small rooms that would work well.. we haven't decided what to do with.

106 to 110 have not been spoken for yet. Here are the competing ideas:

            Friday: https://www.defcon.org/images/defcon...-floorplan.jpg
            Saturday: https://www.defcon.org/images/defcon...-floorplan.jpg
            Sunday: https://www.defcon.org/images/defcon...-floorplan.jpg

#1 During speaking times: Use three rooms as post-speech meeting space. Once a speaker completes their talk, they go to these rooms to further continue any conversations or answer any questions. If there are none for their talk the speaker goes about their way and the room goes empty till the next talk ends. This option helps with attendee / speaker interaction.

#2 Put some more villages here.. xbox hacking village, radio mod village, etc. As the sky boxes will fill up, here is a great place for very focused groups to gather.

#3 Because we can run them later, and the walls are removable, we could combine some of the rooms to grow them.

This would be fantastic since it would help encourage people to leave the main speaking rooms quickly to move to the next talk. It would also be much more comfortable for everyone since there is little seating around the main speaking rooms where much of the discussion happened last year.

It is very nice to see the registration desk moved to the main, large area instead of that mini-hallway. This should help to avoid clogging of this space on Thursday-Friday, and allow it to work as a meeting place for things like the TBBQ food run and main TBBQ event.

It looks like the business center is owned by the con. Does this mean the Business center will be off-limits during the con? (Not that many people used it for any real business last year.)

Will Defcon-spaces be allocated for night-parties like last year? Who is determining room use for these rooms (206-212)

I see "Top of the Riv Ballrooms" listed as allocated. Will these be the home of the B&W Ball and other music? Have arrangements been made to allow the noise-levels for the music? (There were rumors last year that a contributing reason for being shut down was noise-level. I wasn't there saturday, so I missed first-hand accounts.)

80's Video Games. (Mame?) I don't have the tech on hand to donate, or the time to organize, but I have plenty of time to toss out ideas. ]:>

I can support the cause and bring 2 full stand up coin-ops to con for mame. They are on my summer project list. If this is something you would REALLy be interested in, I can arrange getting the equipment to the con floor.

Further, I have 3 footon's that are just hanging out in various garages, including my own, that could be used for "gamers chill" area.

Though donations for truck rentals would be greatly appreciated to do this!

makes one wonder how many quarters it takes to cover cost of getting them there.. and how many quarters would remain after costs covered (ala fundraiser impracticale) .. or how many non-monetary items you'd find in the change bin? :o

This just reminds me of the quarter with a hole in it I used to carry around my neck on a string
