    Folding@Home DefCon project Idea

    So I was thinking....

1.) Bring your PS3 to Defcon
2.) Stow it securely in your room
3.) Connect it to wi-fi or in room ethernet
4.) Connect via VPN tunnel to my private connection to Internet (so you can actually get out to Internet and get work units)
5.) Use the "Defcon15" Team name and your own handle and connect to F@H servers for work units
    6.) ......
    7.) Profit!

It would be interesting to see how much data could be crunched in one weekend by mass amount of PS3's plugging away.

    (1 PS3 = 100 gigaflop)

    Thoughts?

The idea is pretty cool. People can party while their system works. :-)

A similar idea was http://www.flashmobcomputing.org/ but it was not for the folding project.

What's more, your not paying for the power it's consuming.

(You already paid for the hotel room, regardless of a PS3 being used or not, so it don't count! )

..and special props to whoever can get away with a video poker botnet.
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Good point. I recently was overlooking the extra taxes which are not included in room rates for Las Vegas. At least one hotel charges a $3 power surcharge. Get your money's worth! :-)

Yes but you are paying for the lousy hotel wireless connection, depending on where your room is.

We are plotting to take over the world (of PS3's) with our own Wi-Fi hotspots.

This is, of course, if there is a vested interest in the project.

Sounds like a cool idea but whats to stop the "rogue hacker" who wants to destroy all PS3s? also I'd be a little scared to put my PS3 in checked luggage, I'm the CIO of Norfolk international and I know what happens to nice stuff and poor baggage handlers.

We could program it to have blue hair, and complain "WHERE's a roll of nickels? And why don't they carry my Virgina Slims!"

So in theory, only one person would have to pay for internet, right, and then do up the AP?

Assuming...DC gets its own tower... is this still theory or reality?

I can't speak for DC, but for this project, Vegas 2.0 and friends would help provide Internet and AP's for PS3's only, not all of DC compy's and devices.
