Does there really need to be alcohol for sale at the B/W Balls?

Maybe this is more of a question for DT//BB, but personally, I don't think so. This solves tons of the problems we had last year and makes Defcon more public. Do we have to have alcohol to be able to rent the room? Does having it there make the rent cheaper?

That's a good idea, but my guess is that the hotel requires it as part of their income for rental of the space. They assume they'll have X dollars in sales, so they discount the rental of the room by X/50 or some other retarded formula ;)

It's not like people can't just go down the elevator to a bar to get a drink if they don't want to bring their own.

As long as they let me brown bag it, I could care less. But if not, then having it available is nice.

Yeah- I was thinking that having the alcohol there was probably required by hotel. I was just thinking of the drama from last year. I think if you show up with a camelback, noone's gonna have to be the wiser.

i, too, am of the opinion that fewer "official" bar stations are preferable if it reduces hassle... as long as the hassle doesn't then transfer upon people who are bringing their own hooch from place to place.

hotel bars may be a significant part of their revenue stream, but they are horribly overpriced and often have shitty selections. i prefer to tote a backpack or cooler of Smithwick's or something here and there (everyone be sure to bing their shmoocon attendee bags to con) with some ice... as long as that works without my being branded a criminal i'll be happy.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Maybe someone needs to design and market the 'official' defcon camel backpack.

Not to hijack the thread, but I have some information to pass along. Booze will destroy a camelback hydration bladder, in just a few hours. We unfortunately have the scientific data to back this up. DC Goons, working for you.

In that case, you need the Beer Belly:
                http://www.thebeerbelly.com

And for the ladies, they have The WineRack:

No, I'm not selling these, I just think they're pretty funny, and it pertains to mee's camelback idea.

Awww, I was hoping for a little bit more "obvious" wine rack then that! Is that the best before and after they could do?

(not that I would kick that rack out of bed, though it's probably not spending the night!)

Not to roll my eyes at a damn good idea. HOWEVER, I myself would not like to rest a cold beverage inside a pouch on that area of my body. DEFINITELY not for an extended time, It may get uncomfortable, Also to be noted, how does it keep the beer cold? Those body parts tend to be warm, will you transfer heat to the "belly" Also, I thought that carbonation tends to make closed containers like that expel the liquid when you drink from it... Just questions...

This is true, however one thing must be said. It ought be cold.

and what about redbull? Aside from it flying out windows will it spew forth when you open the cap to drink? I would imagine that would be the problem in a camel back thingy....maybe I should shut up and google.....

There should be no alcohol for sale at the ball.

                            It should be FREE.

Amen to that sister. While I wasn't personally affected by the age filter last year I saw alot of folks that were stuck in the hallway. Its a shame to come all that way and want to socialize/party with everyone else only to be shut down on the premise you'll be in the same room with a sinful influence like alcohol. By Saturday night I'm sure they've been exposed to much worse anyway. Best to mark those old enough to drink and let the young'uns join the party.
