  • Rivera/Defcon Block

I'm geussing that if you booked a room via the Rivera/Defcon page that you are assigned a room near to others attending Defcon.

Does anyone know where in the hotel this might be, as mine got booked via Expedia. I assume that this changes each year.

Dunno, we missed the Defcon block last year when it sold out, but got a room under the Darter's convention block for the same $$$, I know there were a bunch of Defcon attendees in the wing and floor we were at.

As long as we don't end up in a section with senior citizens I'll be happy!

        Re: Rivera/Defcon Block

Your can read this post to find out about room blocks and Defcon.

Next, check out The Defcon 15 FAQ and you will find out:
Originally posted by Defcon 15 FAQ

Priority will be given to Defcon to "Deluxe Rooms" (which means, if you booked over the phone with the Riviera Hotel and Casino's Telephone Reservations and said you were with Defcon at the time of the reservation, or you registered for your rooms on this page, then when you check in, if there is a "Deluxe Room" available meeting your criteria, you should get it.

Then, if you do some more research, you will find
        San Remo Tower: Standard Rooms
        Mediterranean North Tower: Superior Rooms
        Monaco Tower: Superior Rooms

        Mediterranean South Tower: Deluxe Rooms
        Monte Carlo Tower: Deluxe Rooms

So, if we are all in one of these two towers, around the same floors, then we might be able to have most Defcon people together, but in reality, this won't happen.

        * Priority for Defcon will be Deluxe Rooms.
This means if a Deluxe room is available in either tower, a new check-in will be assigned to use that room.

        * Not all Defcon people (use the Riv-Phone-Reservations, *and* announced they were with Defcon) *or* special online URL for Defcon. (Parenthesis specify order of logical operation.)
        * Last year, the Defcon allocation of rooms ran out, so some people called in saying they were with the other convention on the premises.
        * Last year, some people made reservations with other sites like Expedia, and these offer a different price for rooms (as well as risk for non-deluxe rooms) meaning people may be in other towers.
        * There will be people with reservations for deluxe rooms that last 2 weeks or more, and also overlap the time Defcon will be taking place, and these rooms will have been assigned based on room availability at that time, which is based on checkout time of previous people, and so-on, leading to risk of fragmentation of contiguous Defcon room assignment impossible without defragmentation by moving these people from their present room to another room, which almost never happens in hotels unless there is a really good reason.
        * They will run out of Deluxe Rooms, so we have even more towers selected as fail-over options at checkin for assignment.
        * more reasons not included. (Hey! My post is long enough!)

        So, there you go.

And you were wondering why they keep me around on these forums, and tolerate my long posts.
        Now you know!
(And knowing is half the battle.)

          Re: Rivera/Defcon Block

I was SERIOUSLY disappointed with my room last year. Heinously expensive and none of the community I felt the previous years at the AP in terms of my neighbors. Of course, it's hard to top having goathead downstairs from you, heh. I didn't ever see anyone on the same floor of my room, at least who was from Defcon, although there was some asshole couple next door who loved to fight all the time.

Anywho, Circus Circus has rooms for $50/night with 2 king sized beds. If you're looking for something cheaper than the Riv with extreme proximity I don't think you can go wrong.

And no, they didn't tear it down.. yet.

            Re: Rivera/Defcon Block

Im staying at Circus Pre-Con. As for the Defcon block of rooms, when I called in and reserved a few weeks ago, they told me that rooms were to be assigned by order of check in. I was hoping there wasnt going to be a repeat of last year..

I guess they like to keep their night operator busy answering noise complaints.

I stayed at circus circus last year.
No doubt the entrance is a walk across the street from the Riviera....
But it took me like 30 minutes to find my way out of the hotel heh.

maybe since its so old and been added on to over the years, it felt like a maze and I was a mouse walking in circles.
My horrible sense of direction may have contributed to it... but I definitely won't be staying there again.

On the other hand, it is mad cheap and worth it if you have to.

It feels like a maze for a reason.. they don't want you to leave!
Vegas is a weird place.. I learned last year that marijuana use is a felony in Nevada because of a push from casinos.. If you're high you aren't as likely to be spending money gambling.
