  • Contest: Music Video Contest

We should have a music video contest where people splice up footage from movies/tv series/games/flash/ etc ... and sync it up to music. Who's up for this? I'm sure their would be some interesting music videos. I'm saying not much censorship except for racist propaganda and shit like tubgirl haha. You don't necessarily have to use the above mentioned footage, you can create your own if you'd like. I'd be game for managing this event if we could actually get it into the lineup.

Let me hear what you peeps have to say about this contest!

    Re: Contest: Music Video Contest

while i don't know how well it would work as a contest, per se, many folks opt to make their own videos and add them to the DefCon "Filler Content" archive which makes appearances on wall projections and used to be part of the DCTV feed. see threads here and here.

If you have something to offer, contact me and i'll see that it gets into the master archive. How and where things are viewed at DefCon, however, remains to be seen.

I should really talk to someone about that. While there may not be a movie channel again, there should be the generic Info Channel... and i think that we can do better than last year's "blurry footage from somewhere way up in the air being played on infinite repeat."
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

      :::::::::::: Official rules for DC's MVC once it gets the green light ;;;;;;;;;;;;

Welcome to the 1st Annual Defcon Music Video Contest! If everything goes according to plan the contest will range from 2-3 hrs in length but due to this being the first year it might be even shorter.

      DC's Music Video Contest Rules:

      Basics:

      - Videos are broken up into four categories:

      - Action/Drama/Comedy and Randomness

      - Videos can be no longer than 7 mins tops

      - Videos can be rated anywhere from rated G to rated R in content.

      - Videos that include racial propaganda, explicit sexual content (rated xxx and beyond, no bukkake, no beastiality, no snuff or the equivalent to snuff, no fecal matter fetishes) and no graphic disturbing images (we are pretty tolerant on what we consider to be disturbing but we ask for no pap smear or tub girl images) will be disqualified.

      - If you're going to do a video that contains 7 mins of the words fuck, piss, shit we might allow it then again we might not. But don't go try passing it off as rated R content.

      - Also, don't make videos of going into someones asshole and playing music in the background and considering that to be artistic. We won't allow it.

      - This contest is about self expression and sharing our visions of the world with others. Although we try to be as lenient as possible on censorship, censorship rules exist to protect the audience from having an unpleasant experience.

      - Although we cannot Guarantee that everyone will not have an unpleasant experience we do the best we can so most of you wont have one.

      Video Formats:

The following encoded video formats are accepted:

      - Divx / X-Vid / Mpeg-2 & 4 / DV /Huffy YUV / WMV / H.264

The following video container formats are accepted:

      - AVI / WMV / MKV / DIVX / MOV

      - The following audio encoded formats are accepted:

      - MPEG-2 Layer 3 / AAC / WMA /

      - Videos can be submitted online or mailed in on a DVD or CD.

      - With your video entry you must include an official defcon mvc application entry that states the following: your name, your age, a mailing address, category video is entered in, video format encoded, video container format video is in, audio format video has been encoded with, name of song used and names of media outlets used in the video.

      - By entering DC's MVC you are agreeing to give Defcon user rights to your video so they may use it in whatever context they please.

      - The copy submitted to Defcon becomes property of Defcon

      - Defcon is not responsible for non compliance of copyright laws on your behalf or whatever you do with the music video you have created on your own behalf.

      - Group entries are allowed for a maximum of 5 people per group. Only one entry is allowed per group.

      - Video's that are considered "trolls" (copies of previous videos entered or copies of videos found online) will be disqualified.

      - Plagiarism will not be tolerated and all plagiarized entries will be disqualified.

And that about sums up the regulations of the 1st Annual Defcon Music Video Contest.

If you get this listed as an official contest or event on the dc15 contest or event page, I can make a contest/event subforum for it.

This late in the game, your event probably won't be in the program or on the CD.

Only about 2 weeks to generate interest in this as a contest... :-o

        Good luck.

Exist, I'm not trying to ruin your idea or fun, but did you take into account how much time an event/contest like this takes, not for the those running said event/contest but those who would want to compete?

Last time I created a MV or an AMV I remember it taking me almost five weeks (172hours) to complete and it was a very short clip(2min32.2sec).

Plus people who wanted to compete in such an event/contest would have to make sure they had all the equipment need to start and finish such a task.

1.Then you have to start on research: length (songs, video, stills, etc.)
          2. Next it's planning
          3. You got to do a lot of listening, mapping out of ideas/strategies
          4. Don't forget to get footage (VHS, Laser Disc, DVD, whatever)
          5. Next you got to view that footage
          6. Now it's time to move on to the capture process
          7. Can't forget to add up the time to do all of the cutting, splicing, and synchronization
          8. Then you have to get it ready so you have a finished product (Bumpers, Compression, and whatnot)

I would love to see/participate in an event/contest like the one you would like to put on, but like I said I think people would need more time than just a few weeks before con to get something put together and ready to go.

If you plan on doing something like this for next year I would defiantly compete. This year with such little time, there's no way hell I'd be able to.

            Re: Contest: Music Video Contest

my responses to this question were along the same lines. i'll re-post here...

i like most of what you've come up with but i would make a few sort of significant suggestions/comments...

            1. i do not see any way that this could be ready in time for this year's defcon. both the organization and the time and resources needed for entries couldn't be had in mere weeks.

            2. i do not see this as an effective "at defcon" type of contest. i think it would work a LOT better if it were like the artwork and slogan contests... where submissions are sent to someone pre-defcon and then that person or a party of judges makes a determination. the winners are then simple given recognition at defcon... like inclusion in the DCTV filler, etc.

            3. i would limit the formats and codecs more strictly. with the filler content, we now only accept DivX, XviD, and MPEG files. windows media, quicktime, realvideo, and all other shit-ass formats are ruthlessly excoriated. also, while there is a ton of terrific source material out there (for both the filler and for user-created music videos) a lot of it only appears on YouTube or boing boing or ebaumsworld after being reencoded a dozen times. a couple standards that i've instituted in the filler archive that i maintain would work well here, too...
3 (a) - no excessive distortions or low quality issues should be present. loads of block noise, bad pixelation, artifacting, or hiss/buzz/blur audio is allowed. just because you're submitting an XviD movie at 400x300 doesn't mean that it's not obvious that it used to be a WMV file at 200x120 with 32kbps sound. come on... this stuff gets plastered way up on the walls in images 10' wide. you think distortions look bad on your monitor? they're ten times as awful during projections.

3 (b) - no logos, splashes, or other bullshit "tags" should appear anywhere in the clip. the occasional "DivX" logo is unavoidable in the lower right corner of a clip for a few seconds if someone is using an older non-registered version of that codec, but URLs, site names, or other tomfoolery shouldn't appear anywhere. if you have a clip that includes this crap at the beginning or end, trim it out completely. if your clip has the lame URL running across the bottom of the screen, crop out off as long as you still have an appropriate amount of the video still visible.
