  • Best webhosts with a large amount of data transfer?

So here's my issue. I'm a DJ and I post up mixes every so often for the world to download. I've had a connection that I could put the mixes on and not have to worry about going over any data restrictions. However, that connection is no more. I usually get 1000 downloads a month, and the mixes are usually 120mb each.

I've found a lot of cheap hosts that have a 3TB transfer each month, but they seem to have a lot of other restrictions that turn it into 100mb a day. Besides actually getting rack space...what are my options?

Slower links with colos and use of torrents to share the files can work. If you can make the rate slow enough for peers to help each other, then that could work for you.

If the content was from a set you did at Defcon, then we should consider a media drop server.

You may have already seen.. but ya, definitely feeling your pain. .. and if they don't get you on those restrictions, they find creative ways to claim you violated ToS. Bottom line is that none of those power hosters intend to actually provide the service they claim.

The toss is between a VPS that includes bandwidth in cost and a rackspace that generally charges minimal for the space and too much for the bandwidth.

A lot of us are looking for decent solutions, so do update as you discover more!
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

You may want to look into something like spread-it.com. I don't know if this is necessarily a viable option for you, but I've used them a few times and they seem to be reasonably decent. Basically, you upload your file to them, they email your recipients that it's available for download, and they have 14 days to download it before it's deleted. Pretty easy. The service is free, and they'll host files up to 500MB in size.

I'd happily recommend dreamhost. If nothing else they'll tell you right damn up front about their business model:

          http://blog.dreamhost.com/2006/05/18...t-overselling/

          relevant quote from linked article:
"Of course, we do actually do have people who use their full 20GB, and actually DO stream porn and use the TB of bandwidth, all for just $8/month. And we actually DO lose a crapload of money on these people! But we only lose it on these people. And there are very few of them. And, as a bonus, they love us. And they refer their friends. Who, on average, don’t use their full 20GB and 1TB."

          and

          http://blog.dreamhost.com/2007/06/14...g-is-a-gamble/

I've been really pleased with them over the past several years. I have an obscene amount of hosting i don't use and tend to part it out to various people who want to run whatever project they've got cooking up.

They've had a couple of serious issues in the past, but they're really good about keeping you updated on anything that's going on with the company on the blog, and technically here:

          http://dreamhoststatus.com

You can also find promo codes for them anywhere that'll save you a chunk of money. I think you can save like $100 off of your initial account purchase with someone's promo code. I don't remember what mine is, but you can find a ton with a quick google search.

I too recommend dreamhost. I set up an account with them to host the LayerOne site, and have since then moved a lot of my 'goofy side project' domains over to them. Customer service is great. No fine print with them either, its pretty much yes or no.

I return whatever i wish . Its called FREEDOWM OF RANDOMNESS IN A HECK . CLUSTERED DEFEATED CORn FORUM . Welcome to me

Hey guys. Thanks a ton. I did sign up with Dreamhost and received 97 dollars off. Combine that with the fact that their tier 3 service is 50% off, and you receive 20% off for signing up for two years, I only spent $280.

I just looked to see how much bandwidth I have, and I think I somehow got the site to accept TWO promo codes...it shows my bandwidth at 4096GB per month! Holy shit.

Remember how I mentioned they've had some serious issues in the past?

Well, they've been boned for about 48 hours now: http://dreamhoststatus.com

I'm sure things will resolve themselves and you'll really enjoy their service. They are a kick ass group of people. They are constantly backing up as well, so if you do something really stupid they can restore you ASAP.

Anyway, all of my sites are shooting 500s at the moment, so don't hate me if your first day with them is a down day :\

Yeah, I saw that they were having issues. But honestly, for 12 bucks a month, I'm not going to complain. If I was worried, and wealthy, I'd just use rackspace or something.

I just finished uploading mixes to it...time to test the bandwidth.

That is definitely the right attitude w/dreamhost.

Good luck with it! Drop a link in this thread when it's up?

Re: Best webhosts with a large amount of data transfer?

As of right now, they're all on my myspace blog. I just did a new blog with some promo codes that might help out other DJs. I'll probably generate some more soon.

If you want to add me to myspace, go to http://ihaveagiantdick.com

And yes, it's a redirect to myspace.

That was an error on their end, not mine. It freaked out for a bit when I switched it to cloaking.
