Kind of like hollywood squares but questions geared toward a range of infosec topics with the celebs being some of the arrogant assholes in our community that we all respect a lot. Trust the expert or trust your instinct?
I'm in the process of trying to think of a more interesting iron-man type contest that involves folks from various security camps ... I may start tapping various folks to play a part if I think its feasible and interesting. The above idea has possibility, but I want to include more people than one or two, I want it to have limited time commitment on a single day, and I want anyone setting foot in the conference to be able to play and learn. Lots of breadth, little depth. Or, maybe multitiered across 3 days with a limited-time event each day .. so beginners can enjoy little depth on day1, medium depth on day2 for more challenge, and something more challenging for the know-it-alls on day3. If you're interested in trying to form it, please pm me. .. nows the time to pull it off.if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.Comment

Re: New ideas?
Here's one I've been thinking about since last year, when I was chatting with a European gent who'd been in Vegas for just over a week (between Blackhat and Defcon) but who'd never seen the Grand Canyon.
The North Rim of the Grand Canyon's only about 90-120 minutes from Vegas by bus. We have lots of attendees from all over the world and some from the US who've probably never seen it. There are buses that can be hired to do the driving. This would leave more time for those on the bus to drink beer.
My thinking is that this would be something to do starting either Sunday afternoon, once the Con is all done, returning midday Monday to the airport, or else Monday bright and early, returning by 5 pm or so to the airport.
Since anyone wanting to do this will need to incorporate it in their travel planning, I wish I'd remembered it earlier and started yapping about it. I didn't. Basically, either option would involve getting back to home/work/family/probation officers/work release a day later. But either option would be an opportunity to see the Grand Canyon, and it's a truly amazing place. One of the Really Cool Things To See.
If we can get a minimum of 15 people to confirm their interest in doing this run, I will see to it that we have transportation and we'll make payment arrangements by June 30. One possibility: leave early Sunday evening, find a place out near the Canyon (maybe even in time for sunset? I'll have to look around at sunset time at that time of year and location) and then head back midday Monday.
That may not be possible or it may be cheaper to stay in town Sunday night, let the compulsive gamblers subsidize our rooms, and then do the run out and back again during the day Monday, probably getting to McCarran around 4 pm or so.
If this doesn't sound like a congenitally stupid idea, suggestions for making it more amusing are welcome. If it does sound that way, obviously you'll want to explain it to me in really small words.Comment

Re: New ideas?
i have always wanted to see the canyon, but it may be one of those things that's just too extreme a venture to be tied to a defcon trip. i mean, those of us organizing the revitalized DC-Shoot are having trouble even coming up with a solid plan to visit the Hoover Dam, and that's barely 10 miles outside the spot where we'll be, i think.
maybe some people would be up for this, but any plan that involves cutting off the sunday night parties is rough in my opinion. if people were to head out there monday just for the day, then i could almost see it.
then again, if someone really picks up the ball and runs with it and if we could have a really secluded spot right near the edge of the canyon where we would be allowed to park and camp, that could kick some ass. thoughts?"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Re: New ideas?
Getting drunk on a bus, too extreme? I hope not. : )
Can I ask whether you're coming from inside or outside the US? If you're inside the US, and you've been to Vegas a few times, but haven't been to the Canyon, that's a pretty good reason for us to think about renting a bus for the day Monday: I'm thinking there may be lots of people in your position. Finding inexpensive lodgings close to the rim may not be trivial. A lot of the north rim is tribally controlled, and getting reservations at the national park means you're dealing with more rules than a lot of us are perhaps good with, plus it tends to be booked in advance.
So, what might this cost? The first place I found just now offers a daylong bus tour can be had for $85.99, and that's before any of the dickering I'd be ready to do if I was pretty confident we were going to have a reasonable number of folks. The same company offers an overnight tour for more dough, $236 per person if you're willing to sleep three to a room. Also, the point about the parties Sunday night is one that had blown past me.
The basic thing we'd need to get a bus on our own schedule is a commitment from enough folks to lock one down.
I need to smoke less brain-addling substance, or more. The bus tours look like they mostly hit the south rim. I'd thought I'd found one last year that was a north rim trip, and I'm going to keep looking around for that, since I recall the travel time as shorter.
In general, I will try to come up with more specifics and shut up for a few days. I wanted to put ballpark costs for folks to think about now, though.Comment
