Re: Who is designing the DEFCON 19 badge?
TV-be-gone was done as well at DC18 using the badge. I walked out with the guys who made the item. As we walked through bars, TV's went off - it worked. Of course we were gone before we got the 'attention'.I am sure the badge by this point is already designed, however , my 2 cents or less would be to see a badge that is "glitzy" enough to capture someone's attention but does something that is interesting enough to challenge someone to expand their knowledge through its use.
For me personally the TV B Gone badge (I believe Defcon 16) was that powerful catalyst. It did something I could immediately see and that made me want to learn more about electronics and how that specific technology worked.
If a badge can capture someone's attention (think the smiley face badge with the LEDs) and that gets them thinking about how LEDs work or how to control its flash pattern then its value is far greater than just a cool show badge.
Seeing the contests that Lost has put together in the past and knowing he is a teacher leads me to believe that the badge will probably be multifaceted. It will be something that will be a lot of fun, but will also make us users have to think and challenge us to increase our knowledge. We can use the DC19 badge for something .. let's do it!Comment

Re: Who is designing the DEFCON 19 badge?
Yes, TV-B-Gones have been made from many different platforms. Modulating IR is pretty simple with standard micros.
As for your sig, we will be able to use this year's badge for something- a badge. ;) Things will be as interesting and fun as people chose to make them. Considering the percentage of people who participated in hacking the badge in previous years (relatively small for the crowd size), we will see how much participation a non-electronic badge receives. See my previous post on the purpose of the badge. I hope everyone has a good time this year.

Re: Who is designing the DEFCON 19 badge?
Thanks Tacitus.
It's no Mystery Challenge, but it's not meant to be. The badge is minimalist, and the puzzles are meant to be fun, accessible to the entire conference on *some* level, and accessible to very few on *other* levels. But above all, I hope people meet and talk to others.

yeah, I bet the budget per piece is a lot lower than the mystery challenge :)Thanks Tacitus.

I like that concept... everybody can get something out of it, and if you want you and put more time into it and get even more of it.
I think you have a proven track record of deviousness and ingenuity so I look forward seeing what you did!Comment

Re: Who is designing the DEFCON 19 badge?
Well, it's not as 'stuff' intensive, logistically it couldn't be. It's also not a three day time sink. It's relatively simple (I hope) but still entertaining (I hope) ;)
And you guys always flatter me so.

Eh, I also appreciate badges which can easily be broken so as to turn into weapons, like at DC13 :)Comment

Re: Who is designing the DEFCON 19 badge?
Actually, I think the non-electronic badge thing is awesome.
With the lack of electronics the number of badges would be more (e.g. a greater chance of the majority of people actually getting badges).
Further, with LosT at the helm, I think the chances of the badges being uber-awesome are very high. And there is a high probability of them being very "interactive".
Even with the Electronic Badges, I think my favorite is still dc12's badge. Though, after what LosT has said (so far) about this years badge, I think I may be changing my favorite.
Perhaps you should wait to see the badge before passing judgement. And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts, And I looked and behold: a pale horse. And his name, that sat on him, was Death. And Hell followed with him.Comment

You joined in 2011 and are already complaining? That's too bad.
Smile and be happy.
Change can be good and can be fun.
The HHV will still be there for all of your electronic desires.

Re: Who is designing the DEFCON 19 badge?
We have gone to great lengths to make sure there are enough badges this year.
Thanks for the vote of confidence. Elegance in simplicity. Deceptive simplicity.
I know not everyone will like the badges, but not everyone liked the electronic badges either- some people really didn't like having a big heavy badge around their neck for three days....

Leaked photo of the new, non-electronic, badge.
This is what happens when I run out of Rum for my Coke.

All joking aside, I'm really looking forward to seeing the new badges.
As Tacitus mentioned, the DC13 badges were sweet. I know DC19 badges will not be a let down!
See you guys in a week!!Comment
