Now that we actually have a subforum for the B&W Ball / Top of the Riv, maybe they will join the forums and discuss such things.

The other possibility is that, like many other people that attend defcon, they neither read, nor post, on these forums. Personally, I prefer mailing lists. I've only joined because I currently have the time, and I thought it would be useful to represent Coffee Wars. I saw so many hits on the site that had come from posts on the forum, I thought I might as well come and see it. I suppose, like IRC, forums draw certain types of people. Perhaps most DJs are not that type.

I know Regenerator is busy and Catharsis has his record lable. I don't mind tho, I know people have lives and the forums are just a subpart of DC. (Granted I throw club nights, throw raves, dj, and run around with my antlered head cut off, not necessarily in that order.)

We can play both nights, and do different styles if needed. I don't know how to get signed up, though. I sent DT two e-mails before, but never got a reply. But, I'm down to play both nights, and so is Steve.

Agreed on the topic of certain people coming to the forums, I'm only here because I can't find any other mention of the B&W Balls. Forums are scary places. People get really mean in these things.
So I went looking through photos of past balls, and I've got some questions now... How many people attend them? And how serious is the "no street clothing" dress code? Do people actually restrict themselves to black and white attire? From the photos I saw, it looks like I'll be dancing with about 20 people in t-shirts. And here I wanted a freaky, fancy night of dancing! Is all hope lost, or did I just see several bad patches of pics?

The last year or two we have been trying to increase the freak factor. Bink will be setting the standards, so I hope to actually turn people away who are wearing white tube socks and a baseball hat.
I've seen all kinds of cool outfits from custom corsets, latex body suits to horns and chains.
What we really need is a good write up for the web site and the printed program.

The mods and admins have been working hard to revise and enforce the existing rules. One of the rules we started enforcing more strictly was the "Flaming is reserved as a tool used only by moderators."
The forums shouldn't be a "super-happy-fun-time" or a "caustic napalm ignited flamefest as seen in Dante's 9th plane of hell" but they should be useful and serve a purpose.
4 steps to help people avoid troubles on most forums:
1) Understand and follow the rules
2) Stick with discussing what you know. (This primarily applies to answers not questions.)
3) Don't pretend to be/know something you're not/don't know.
4) If you make a mistake, admit it, learn from it, appologize, and move on.
We created this subforum for the B&W Ball and Top of the Riv because it is an event, and people have discussed this in the past. My mistake in not including it sooner.

I understand what you are saying, but it is unfair to classify all of the music under the name "techno". There are usually many different styles present even if most of them are electronically generated.
Furthermore, the type of environment at the "B&W" is not all that common. You can maybe find an atmosphere like that that once every month of so (assuming you live in a large city). At least, that has been my experience.
Having said that, I don't spend much time at the ball. I go to over 200 shows a year (of various geners) ... DefCon is something of a vacation from music for me.

When I saw the "troll" accusation, I was going to make an issue of "moderators enforce the rules," then link to Chris' post (since there is a rule that addresses trolling) and then go further and notify the user making the accusation of their use of "sms"-speak ("plz") which is a clear rule violation, that I might have overlooked if the subject of trolling and rule vilations were not brought to my attention.
In the end, It was too much work, so I decided not to do it, but I just did anyway. So that means... dangit.

Did you even look at the lineup? I have a hard time seeing how anyone can classify Minibosses as "techno".true... they are 100% rock with guitars and drums. of course, they play music inspired by other music which was often of the electronic genre... and people who don't know a lot about electronic music started calling everything in the world "techno" in the mid 90s... so by some six-degrees of separation i could see a highly person putting them in that category.
in all seriousness, i'm a bit concerned about the dress code provisions with respect to the minibosses set. lord knows where i was that night last year, but i didn't make it to the party when they played at DC13. i'll be doubly-pissed if i'm actually turned away from the scene this time around because i don't own spiffy club clothes. if i bribe the door goons with booze will have a shot at slipping by?

Well last year it was very last minute, barely announced, and a private party. The bouncers for that party (Ninja Networks?) were huge jerks, too; some of them were getting physically violent with people that were just trying to get back to their nearby-located rooms. The music was okay, but you could tell the Minibosses weren't having fun in the midst of all of this. Ben (of the band) decided he'd never do DefCon again, but I suppose the passing of a year and an official spot in the playlist have changed things.

I asked after this, as well, and it sounds like bink will be cool with you (see the thread).
As far as the dress code goes... Who cares if you're wearing all white with feathers or a full leather jump suit. It's just the "theme". You don't have to come dressed in theme, but the IDEA here is to at *LEAST* treat it like you're going out to a night club. At a night club, you wear nice clothes. Don't come looking like a bum. That's about it. "Historically" the B&W was when people would come out wearing a tux. Wearing something that doesn't involve a tank top and an A's hat really isn't much to ask, is it?
Now, as far as my troll accusation, I was fairly certain the "plz" would have made people realize I was only half serious. I kinda want to insert 'Ascii with man with hands on face' right now. This is Defcon for christ's sake, not a meeting with congress. Lighten up folks =)

In the end guys, just please remember that Defcon is really DT's party that he throws for us.
As a professional party promotor, I know that if i want a feel for a party, its what I will ask for and what I will expect. If it was up to me, I would be a little (just slightly) more leanient on the dresscode, but the BW is supposed to be a fun atmosphere and classy and a bit strange. The other thing to have in mind- you have a year to arm yourself with clothings.

This is Defcon for christ's sake, not a meeting with congress.heh, funny you'd mention meeting congress... i actually got into an argument with my university administration over a trip they had arranged to washington D.C. when i found out they wanted to impose a dress code. i liked the idea of the trip, since it was originally going to involve highly discounted rates and meetings with a variety of government officials. in the end, i didn't mind backing out so much since all the real people cancelled on us or changed the meetings by scheduling lower-level flunkies in their place. instead of meeting john sununu or my local congressman we were going to watch money being made and take a meeting with the undersecretary's assistant deputy in the department of no-one-cares. also, this trip was scheduled in july and they were "requiring" all participants to wear full suits and ties.
the actual argument that i used when explaining my reasons for declining included the line of reasoning that "these people work for me. i pay them, and i don't quite frankly give a damn what is expected inside the beltway in the way of attire." i've sat in meetings with my state and local officials before (and had plenty of casual encounters with senators, etc. in D.C.) wearing the same shorts and casual shirts that everyone here has seen me in at every con event. i just hate dressing up for any reason, really. if i were the type to marry, i'd insist that no one wear suits or tuxes to the wedding... and when i die i want my funeral in a bar or backyard BBQ setting, with my pall bearers under orders to confiscate ties and throw them on the fire.

At least one mod replied to the issue of false claims about the B&W ball being all techno, but this was not a warning about the rules.
None of the mods replied to your troll accusaion or "plz" statement, until it started to become a sub-topic in the thread, and that is when I commented.
Hopfully, we can move on to a topic other than, "The B&W Ball is all Techno" and "Trolling is bad / how can you call him a troll?"
How about people's view of the different artists coming to spin/play?
What about people that should be considered for next year? What about who you think should have made this list, and maybe who shouldn't have made the list?
There is so much more that can be discussed here.
Here let me start one...
I'm so out of this scene, none of these artists or names are familiar to me except the Minibosses by name, and of course Jackalope. Are the rest of them really good? In the unlikely event I would actually visit the B&W Ball, other than Jackalope and the Minibosses, which show/set should be first on the list to see?

I was drunk and in a bad mood (like all defcons), what do you expect? And to be honest, half of the bouncers, at some point during the night, were goons. Not saying any of them got violent, but make sure you know what you're talking about. As for them not having enough fun... well... with the amount of substances in their systems, I imagine they don't really recall if they had fun or not. Maybe the part that wasn't fun was, despite every attempt to wake them, they still missed (or almost missed... ?) their flight. Who knows? I had a decent time though.

I wasn't blaming you (nor could I really identify the offender). I think it was the standard case: one or two bad apples giving me a bad impression about the whole thing.
And to be honest, half of the bouncers, at some point during the night, were goons.
You are right, I should have been more clear on this point. The goons that were helping out were great.
As for them not having enough fun... well... with the amount of substances in their systems, I imagine they don't really recall if they had fun or not.
They are a band. Those guys handle substances on an entirely different level than the rest of us.

Well, Aaron loved it, Ben didn't. I think in the end it was probably just different personalities handling the crazy/disorganized atmosphere of the whole thing.
I had a decent time though.
Of course! I'm just glad Q tipped me off they were hanging around. I'm still kind of upset that I missed the second show, though. (Assuming it happened ... the last I heard, somebody was trying to track them down at the Hard Rock.)
Anyway, I'm not trying to step on toes. I was just really upset at seeing people mistreated so that others could have their fun.

Well, for friday it's all DJ's. As the title says, expect Industrial/EBM/Darkwave. I'll mainly be doing EBM and Power Noize. Kris is doing old school (Meaning late 80's through mid 90's industrial/EBM [Revco, Wumpscut, Zoth Ommog bands, etc]) Can't speak for Delchi as I'm not sure what he's gonna play; Shatter's playlists are scattered around at the clubs he does up in the Bay Area's websites.
Regenerator... I wanna go ahead and call them Darkwave though they might get mad at me for saying that. Minibosses... Uhh, old NES game soundtracks done with guitar/bass/drums.
DJ's for saturday are most likely going to be psytrance and drum n bass I'm assuming.

hi, this is aaron from minibosses. i would just like to clarify a few things...
we all had a great time playing last year at the ninja networks private party - the equipment was amazing, everyone was really nice, and we had a total blast actually playing our set. it was a little of what happened afterwards that soured the experience for some, but i won't get into that here, and overall it was a fantastic time. ben was not present for the show last year, we had 2 substitute bassists, so ben doesn't really have an opinion on what happened last year, but he sure did hear all about it!! the show was last minute, and both booked and organized extremely well by ninja networks.
we can't wait to play this year, we're gonna have a blast.
so basically, the most important truism in the preceding posts was the part about the amount of drugs in some systems, and i hope that gets repeated this year too... help a brother out...
