There is still room for filler, Tierra will be posting in this thread soon with info on how to get him clips.those who upload filler must first bow and tremble in amazement at my uber-leet video awesomeness powers. heh... well, nothing so astounding is necessary, but i did do an assload of editing and reencoding work on the old filler material, finishing just in time to get it out to tierra before con. (this was after disk crashes and other horrid craziness resulted in my having to do the project over again three times)

a quick summary of what was done...

1. i started by taking absolutely everything that was in a shit-ass format (basically, anything that wasn't MPEG or XviD) and reencoding it. in the end, i reencoded the MPEG files as well, mostly because they were VCDs set to 352 horizontal as opposed to 320 and not everyone's players will fix the aspect ratio automatically, which can generate some unwatned stretch.

2. sound levels, while not universally normalized, have been addressed on nearly all clips. those that were outrageously loud or soft are pretty decent now. this isn't perfect across the board but it should lead to a lot less frantic grabs for the remote control when you have DCTV playing in your room.

3. some clip "collections" which were incompleted or badly disorganized are fully fleshed out now... specifically, all 25 GI Joe spoofs are accounted for (remastered to XviD with MP3 sound) and the half-dozen WRC racing music videos have been placed along side of the full collection of ~20 which are mainstays of that community.

4. anything that was splashed with a logo, URL, or other advertising has had that edited out. i personally dislike when people take a funny clip or amazing video segment and smear the URL of their bullshit personal web page or advertising scam site on it. i've cropped out URLs that appear on the top or bottom edge of clips and simply cut off other videos at the begining or end as needed.

5. anything which was a music video where i felt the sound sucked ass, i took a proper quality MP3 from my collection of music (or from P2P networks) and re-mastered the clip with full, rich music. some of the Anime Music Vids and the WRC racing clips sound a lot better now.

the full collection of filler content at present is as follows...

[ Time Attacks ]

Time Attack - Castlevania
(played without tool assist, mixed with leet music from Minibosses, Ryan 8-bit, Goat, etc. because of the soundtrack i can safely say this is the greatest time attack vid i've ever seen. i added a running clock in the corner, something i did for all the time attacks actually, and tagged each song with artist and title information... it's like MTV without the sucking!)

Time Attack - Contra
(beaten in 9:28)

Time Attack - Donkey Kong
(all three levels beaten in 1:08 total)

Time Attack - Gradius
(played using "speed" powerup exclusively... about two minutes into it the ship is so fast it can repeatedly loop around bullets and other obstacles as they zip across the screen)

Time Attack - Super Mario Brothers
(princess rescued in 5:09)

Time Attack - Super Mario Brothers 2
(wart deffeated in 7:42)

Time Attack - Super Mario Brothers 3
(bowser deffeated in 10:38, player finishes game with 99 lives)

Time Attack - Tetris
(fastest possible 999999 score... the guy starts the game on level 19, then fills half the screen with a vertical column in order to have less distance for pieces to fall. he then completes exclusively four-line tetris scores while dancing on the top edge practically the whole way. 999999 score is hit at 3:31 time mark)

How are we going to be able to get in on the Movie Channel, is it broadcast in the riviera or what?

Tierra

First off, thanks to Deviant Ollam for the massive amount of work put into cleaning up and organizing the filler, I spent a full work week last year on the filler and didn't even come close to the results Deviant did (though my work was more on collecting clips last year than cleaning them up). This should make it much more bearable to sit and watch filler without clips playing twice in a row, and fidgeting with the volume on the TV with every new clip.

I know it's getting pretty late to be posting this, but we could use some new filler that's come out in the last year added to the playlist. I've seen some really good stuff, and some really bad stuff in the last year. When Google Video came about, I thought a good portion of the next year's filler was going to come from there as well as YouTube. A year later, and my predictions were proven wrong. I can't stand to sit and watch anything on YouTube, and honestly, almost all of the Top 100 on Google Video are crap. So we're back to the traditional method of video collection getting them from the people we know that know what's good: you.

Getting to the point, I've brought back the DCMC Filler Repository:
http://ibaku.net/filler/

Try to avoid uploading horrible quality videos, I've put a cap of 50MB on the uploads which should be more than enough for some high quality, lengthy videos. If that's not enough, PM me with a URL of the video and I will download it manually.

It will be broadcast to all rooms in the Riviera, check the Defcon guide for channel information (hopefully it'll be there, otherwise you'll have some channel surfing to do).

Best DCTV movie line-up...Ever!

I don't know. It's certainly a good line-up, but, and I think we discussed this last year, I'd like to see more movies that we haven't all seen before. Of course, that would also mean fewer people watching, less catching just a scene or two of your favorite flick, and who really wants to encourage people to watch entire movies at DefCon.

Anyway, glad to see Brazil, Primer (a film with DefCon history), and Dark City on the list. It is a good line-up (even if I don't know how Harold & Kumar made the list of all hacker-type movies ... maybe it was NPH that did it ).

It's never been our goal to be 100% hacker oriented movies. I like variety and have needed a break from the dystopic/hacker related films to venture into some other genres in the past.

I know that, and I understand. I mentioned it only because, with the possible exception of Trainspotting, it was the only movie that fell outside the category of "dystopic/hacker related films".

Tierra

True, that puts us at 93% hacker related films. I actually wanted to get 2 other non-hacker related movies on the schedule, but pushed for them a little late into making the schedule. I don't know how much Aeon Flux is really hacker related either though. It's somewhere in the same category as Gattaca which I thought was better. I think we played it couple years back at 11 or 12, and it's probably due for a comeback next year.

I'm curious what those might be, but I can wait and be surprised next year.

Like Brazil, Minority Report, and others on the list, that definitely falls into your "dystopic" category.

How about "Catch Me If You Can"?
I know it stars Leonardo DiCaprio but the movie (and the book) is one of the best social engineering stories that I seen in awhile.
Just my input.

For those of us you could not get a room at the Riviera, will there be a copy on DVD/s?

It would be a great souvenir.

Or will you possibly play these clips on tv's in and around the event floor?

I doubt that the movies will be publicly mentioned as available at the con. However, it is possible that the filler might be. I'd like DVD of the filler though. Will Filler be available on DVDs? If so how many, and how much?

I don't know, but while you wait for an answer, such a thing has been done before...

Wayyy back in Defcon 6? and maybe 7? There was a TV that played various movies related to hacking. If I recall correctly, one year, it was on a corner section surrounded by fake partitions made of cloth, and another year, it may have been in it own room. I seem to recall that gamers, co-opted one of these spaces and player computer games while watching the video, until someone tried to use the TV screen as an external monitor. (I don't remember what happened after that, but later in the con, the TV was off.)

I made maybe 15-20 DVDs with everything that was on the playlist along with some extras that weren't last year. I might do the same this year if I have time to burn some off. I'd be willing to trade for beer, though Deviant deserves the credit this year for the filler.

If I do burn some copies off, I'll leave it as an exercise for you to find me at the con if you want a copy. I missed making it to the forum meet last year, but I'll make a another attempt to find it in time this year. I might also leave some copies at the Scavenger Hunt table assuming Siviak and Pinguino managed to put together the hunt this year.

We put together a torrent of the same content on the DVD last year as well, but there's no plans to do that again this year. But if anyone that manages to get a DVD off of me (assuming I make them) wants to put one together after Defcon, I'll help seed.

Deviant Ollam

heh... but it's still like version 0.9 of the filler since i can't stop myself from adding more stuff. (i noticed that somehow the five Jesus Christ Supercop eps were missing as well as one or two other clips.)

all in all, i'm doing my best to keep it at a single DVD size. i, too, will have a short stack of discs available at con. perhaps we'll keep a few in the lockpick village and the rule will be "you can borrow this for five minutes if you have a laptop right here" and i'll let ya' copy it.

also, word is that the travelling terabyte will also be making an appearance. i doubt we'll have much time for people to copy data off it (but, i do promise that if anyone were to actually show up with a 500 Gig drive they could mirror one of the two disks) but you can all drool at it before ASTCell takes it off to parts unknown.

That's good because while my MacBook Pro reads dual layer it does not write them. To write dual layer I would have to use my Dell D620, company provided, which had the dual layer DVD-RW. (Yes, I;ll have both with me!)
