if not i've got about 10 -20 lbs of iron oxide laying around somewhere.

Thermite and SolidOx are indeed considered "Binary Explosives".

I a .pdf file somewhere listing what is considered a "Binary Explosive", but I'll have to search for it if anyone wants to read/see it.

We've actually never had a problem with drunks on the line before. Having the shoot at the crack of dawn has prevented a lot of that. Plus when you get out there and its in the low 100s, cracking open a cold one is the least of your desires.

as to the drinking. you know we'll end up with at least one or two who are already gone or try to start while were at the range. Just making it official like that would prevent those little embarissing moments.

i find it hard to imagine a place where DDs and AOWs are on the menu but Tannerite isn't. If you can lob 40mm shells downrange, a little boom and puff of smoke should be fair game.

I left a message yesterday, just got off the phone with them today.

    Bad things

    No armor piercing bullets.
    No Flash Bangs.
Binary explosives maybe Insurance is looking into it.

    Good things

    Machine guns OK
    Silencers OK
    AOW’s OK
    Destructive Devices OK

I get a quote in the morning.
    Tell you more then.

Thanks for the help guys, I wouldn’t expect you to spend the entire day not shooting, hell if only a few people show I might even take some range time myself.

Not drinking before, and during the shoot. Is one of those, if you don’t know it go and jump off a bridge please. Type of things.*

Hearing, and Vision protection is also mandatory, and the people who don’t know this shouldn’t be participating in the event.

I can’t stress this point enough.
This is not a Training event, it would be great if we could invite everyone, but we can’t, a one day event is not the place to learn proper use, handling, and safety procedures. I couldn’t in good conscience allow someone who is likely to make beginner mistakes participate, and possibly harm someone… Hell even experienced shooters make mistakes. Feel free to come, and watch. Pay attention and you might even learn a few things.

Haden please send me a PM with the time “Preferably PST.”, date, and IRC link.

you know ill pitch in as so too but like deviant i would like to get in some range time. i do think we need to establish some ground rules though like no beers till after the shoot, hearing protection, and vision protection by all on the range. fatal we need to set up a common time and channel on irc to have some talk on organization

I will happily volunteer to act as a safety officer, at least part time. I'd like to get some shooting in but I'll help out on the rules and regs enforcement if there are limited people on that front.

Full disclosure: i am not certified in any way by any recognized body. i've acted as an RSO in a small-scale capacity amongs social groups and when teaching groups of novices to shoot, but i have no formal NRA training. (it's been on my list for a while.)

the primary extent of my oversight was religiously enforcing the four rules and coordinating when the range was hot or cold.

    Re: defcon shoot?

Well the good thing about this range, is that when you set up a private event you also get a ten minute mandatory refresher, and that should be good enough for anyone who has shot before, if you haven’t shot before, this is not a training event, you are welcome to come along and watch, just don’t try to shoot because, if you look like you don’t know what you are doing you will be taken off the line and be asked to put you gun/s away.

You can bet your ass that if I even think anyone is about to do something stupid or if anyone else witnesses stupid behavior I’ll personally boot the dumbass, faster them Microsoft tried to make us forget about Bob.

Also I won’t be doing any shooting, so that we have at least one person who can constantly watch out for stupidity. I welcome any help that anyone would be willing to give, let’s make this a safe, and fun event.

Any RSO’s that would be willing to help, greatly appreciated you will be. expect free beer after event. Please toss me a PM.

Deviant Ollam and noid, thanks for all of the help/advice I’ll be sure to add your questions to Wednesdays list.

    Re: defcon shoot?

I'm interested in seeing someone pick up the ball and run with this. I was one of the original DC-Shoot organizers, so let me share with you what we were handling before you agree to pick it up and run with it.

The most obvious reason we let it lapse was the fact that all of us are also Defcon staff, so it became too difficult for us to do both things. The less obvious reason we let it go was because of safety concerns. Realize that the last time we did it we had roughly 80(!) people on the line, and the line stretched wider than some ranges are long. You need a significant force to police that line, and a good means of communication to coordinate between the range officers. We had been able to do it in the past with 3 or 4 range officers, however our RSO's wanted to shoot too. To do this right you'd need 4 or 5 range officers (NRA certified if possible), a communication plan, and a range operations plan. When the event gets as big as it did, safety becomes a very major issue. I'm happy to say that in the years we did it the worse that ever happened was Xinc getting a jacket from a 9mm stuck in his forearm. Part of that was having skilled RSO's, and quite a bit of luck.

So know what you are taking on before you take it on.

That said, if you do decide to do it, find out if the range is NFA friendly to Machine Guns (not just theirs, but ours), Silencers, AOWs, and Destructive Devices.

    Re: defcon shoot?

I'd certainly be up for this, but depending on the size of the group and how well i know the people who start raising hands, i'm very likely going to start asking questions concerning range masters, safety and policy, etc.

In previous years, the DefCon Shoot was a self-policed affair like the rest of our community's events. People who everyone could trust were in charge and their word was law. When the range went hot or cold was respected by everyone and people were kicked out without emotion if people were stupid. I'd demand that level of decorum if i were to participate.

That said, i'd love to participate in this and i'd happily bring a few weapons along. Most likely, my 1911 and Ruger 10/22 since they're fun, easy, and (especially in the case of the Ruger) cheap to shoot. Anyone who wanted to do some long-distance stuff for pennies per shot would be welcome to put some 22LR downrange with my scope.

I also have some shotguns, etc. but I don't know if i'd be toting them along or not. For anyone who's never tried firing a lupara one-handed, it's an interesting experience. Full-power buckshot gives you complete appreciation of the nickname "wristbreaker" on that little beauty.

    Re: defcon shoot?

Ok I’ll give them a call on Wednesday, and ask them a few questions.

    Tannerite and/or explosive targets?

If they can order the explosive targets for us?

BYO Class III, and if they sell ammo?

From you guys I’ll need to know.

    What you’ll be shooting?

    Aug 6 Time 14:00-17:00?

How many thank that they can make it? “I may reserve as a private event if more then ten, and they allow Tannerite”

Carpool, and if so how many cars will be available?

    Food/beverage?

    Drinking after shoot?

    Desert Springs OK for everyone?

Desert Lake sounds fine, we just need to find out if they are game for using Tannerite, and bringing out the various flavors of .50 rifles. I see they rent machine guns, so BYO Class III shouldn't be an issue.
