Wow, I really like it! I like how you can change it to the old theme too,maybe Neil can make a couple of "themes" for the different types of Defcon folk, just an idea!


For those who don't like it ( those traditionalists who drink way too much coffee and despise change), you can change it at the bottom of the page!

Any way to get the old look to stay stuck in User CP? I'm old, traditional, drink to much of everything, and despise change.. (Have always been a true believer that newer is rarely better and have seen that belief stand the test of time). Besides, the new font and background/ foreground color differences actually hurts my eyes. Otherwise, it looks cool to me.

I'm glad I saw this thread first. I am not particularly fond of the look of the defcon site, but then, I preferred some of the old designs, and at least it isn't that hideous blue crap anymore. I find it difficult to read, and it doesn't consistently render well in all browsers. That said, I'm hoping that selecting the older style sticks, but from what Greyhatter is saying, it won't.

I really prefer the quieter look of the older style. I'm interested in words, primarily, and anything that makes it harder to read is not a positive, in my book. Sometimes simple is best.

I logged out, and logged back in, just to verify. Please consider changing it back. It makes things much harder to read. Failing that, please set some kind of cookie so that those of us who preferred the quieter look can keep it, without having to set it each time. It might also be kinder to make the pull down menu a little more obvious. Had I not seen this thread, I don't know that I would have realized it existed. Even knowing that there was a pull-down menu, I still had to hunt, hard, to find it.

Bit of a shocker, but I do like it a lot. One request - can font not be white-ish? I can see yellow or green better on the black because the white sort of bleeds.

If you really want to see your style selection persist across logins:

So long as the original style is available...

1) Visit your cookie listings in your browser.
2) If you have cookies for both defcon.org and forum.defcon.org, purge both
3) Log back in to the forums.
4) Once you are logged into the forums, edit options in userCP, or click here:
https://forum.defcon.org/profile.php?do=editoptions
5) Scroll to the bottom, and locate the "skins" selection (which is really the same as "style")
6) Choose Defcon Original
7) Save
8) Now try logging out, and logging back in again.
9) Report problems with this procedure here.

You won't see the old style when not logged in-- that is the new default for guests and anonymous browsing.

Merci beaucoup CotMan! It seems that when I changed the settings as you directed it stays fixed at the site here. Sorry to be such a stingy old bastard, but, thanks for giving me back my normal sight.

The bleeding l also see may be due to the extreme white on black. What I like about the old background is that depending on the LCD screen angle it is dark to light grey adjustable. The white lettering is not as intense either. This may have less to do with the larger font and more to do with background and foreground color schemes.

Just for fun I tested the page load speed between the older and newer format using dial-up. Big difference here as the new pages take 2 to 4 x longer to load than the the older format. Those with DSL and above will not notice much, but beware if your forced to serf this sight with retarded bandwidth. FYI

I like it, it looks very slick. Though I do agree that the white font is a bit abrasive. Perhaps something like a light grey?

Ya.. as with anything I have criticism to toss around, but overall the style change is a breath of fresh air. These pages have been pretty static for a while, for better or worse, but often out of theme with the rest of Defcon stuffs.

I think a few tweaks to make the blue and white text conform, plus a little toning down of the dotted borders would make things absolutely playable.

Nice! I like it! Love the font, too.

Only change I'd make is not to have "New Posts" in white. Maybe yellow, red or green. But white is the color of a selection we make, and eyes tend to look at white last. For a second I thought New Posts" had been removed. And I'm not even drinking.

Hey all,

First of all, thanks for all your feedback! I just wanted you to know that I see some of the issues arising, and I think they can be addressed relatively painlessly. While I can't say that we can keep the old theme as a user selectable choice (I don't know if it's an option, it's not up to me), I can take steps to enhance the usablity of this theme without sacrificing the ultimate goal of uniting the style of the Defcon sites. Keep it coming, and I'll try to address the objective problems that arise. For those of you that love it, thanks for the kind words!
