i dunno where i'll be. it'll be my first con :( past three years haven't been "my" three years. and on august 2 i get my life back! so i'll be in vegas. okay.. newbie question... do you gotta buy your pass at the door or sacrifice your new born type of thing to get one?!

      AP and DC

I NEVER stay at the AP. I like Vegas so I prefer to stay at the fancy ass places when I'm not on site at the AP. Plus, with all the crazy shit going on at DC each year, it's nice to step away for a while. I was at Harrahs 2 years ago, Paris last year, and the Aladdin this year.

that was my thought too... what has getting to and from the con been like? any downsides to expect from staying elsewhere?

          staying elsewhere

I'm staying at the San Remo because it's cheap. I'll only be there for a few hours a day anyway. This leaves me more money to spend at Defcon!

            elsewhere

I stayed at the Marriot Residence last year. It's really nice place to stay (free breakfasts, and mon-thurs free dinner as well). It was a couple of blocks to go back and forth, not an unreasonable walk. The only reason I'm not staying there this year is because I wanted somewhere closer that I could ditch my laptop, and make it to those early morning talks on time.

hell..I'd love to stay somewhere other than the Alexis. My problems is, if I leave hotel property for more than 20 minutes, all hell breaks loose. Trying to make the shoot every year is fun.
I stayed at the Amerisuites a few years back. Nice hotel, but had an interesting experience there. The day manager was talking to me and Queeg about 'how do you spot a fed anyways?'. After we told him a few of the basics (i.e. jarhead haircut, sock tan, lack of humor, oversized 'no I dont have a gun in here, honest' fanny pack) that we look for, he mentioned 'well, the could look like anyone tho, even hotel managers'. He then flashed his badge at us. I asked the rather hip convience bus driver (who actualy had a handle 'Rev. Lowdown') if he was aware of the manager being a fed and was told 'oh ya, this is just a side job for him or something, lots of cops 'n shit stay here'..just something to be aware of

Wow. Cool story. Maybe all the Amerisuites is a front for the Government :p .
But honestly, maybe they have a partenership with certain government agencies. Field agents go traveling alot, and they always have to stay in a motel (flashes back to old X-Files episodes, old seasons, not the new ones). Maybe they get government funding and Amerisuites is their little place they can use in Vegas.
Who knows...any feds on this board? Hah hah hah....

Fuck the Hard Rock. I stayed there for Defcon 7 and frankly, it sucked ass. The staff were rude, our room wasnt ready, they put a freeze on my assets when I used my Debit card to hold the room (They now have signs to that effect, but not the year I stayed there). We ordered room service one night and it was 2 hours late. My girlfriend almost beat the hell out of the check in girl cuz she was just giving the both of us attitude. When I told them that they had frozen ALL of my liquid assets and I now had NO money, they wouldnt even so much as comp me a meal at the resturant. Their drinks suck and they've got the tightest slots in Vegas. I wrote them a nasty letter after I stayed there and they called back and tried to give me a free weekend. Funny. I asked them 'didnt you read my letter? ya'll can go choke on fat cock, why in gods name would I want to stay there again free or not?'. The gen. manager couldnt give me a good answer so I hung up on em. Only thing the Hard Rock has going for it is Mr. Lucky's, the 24 hour diner, which thankfuly you dont have to be a guest to eat at. Ok..I need to go take my blood pressure medicine now..
                    fuck that place..

Theres a number of good inexpensive hotels in the area
Theres the St. Tropez next door to the Alexis. Theres the Amerisuites down the street. The San Remo is nice (suprisingly good sushi there) and cheap. Its a little down the road, but its nice.

i think the fed story was enough to nix amerisuites for me...

                            alexis

hmm last year i stayed at the days inn about a mile away the walk sucked...bad. and i got a sparc at dc so i had to carry that back to the hotel at 11pm in boiling hot weather... i got reservations at the alexis this year! besides i have another 2 years before i can gamble so vegas isnt all that appealing to me. anyways my experience with staying elsewhere has not been too fun. i guess i find out if it makes that much of a difference this year.

                              Why leave?

I have never stayed anywhere but the Alexis Park and find that to be the best way to enjoy the con. It's part of the con experience, and you spend a lot of time walking back and forth between your room and the events.

Last year I got a room on the walkway and threw my scrolling LED display in the window with interesting messages for people to read as they walked past. The pool parties, the screaming, the fun, the chaos. I love staying at the Alexis, I wouldn't have it any other way.
