Make sure you don't leave any DNA at Defcon. They'll use that for sure.

Oh sure, 8000 hackers wrapped in full latex suits. That'll make the news.
A third party security audit is the IT equivalent of a colonoscopy. It's long, intrusive, very uncomfortable, and when it's done, you'll have seen things you really didn't want to see, and you'll never forget that you've had one.

Please like that would ever happen. Think about it for a second...."Free Booze...Sweet I'll drink some", just like that the whole not leaving DNA idea is out the window.

          How about:
(Jedi-Mind-Trick)"I'm not the fed you're looking for..."

However, what about getting a room? I am sure the feds pull the hotel records for every hotel during the Defcon period.

How does one get an anonymous hotel room in Vegas? I have cash, but don't want to do the entire fake ID thing. Room sharing is out as I keep strange hours and sharing a room bugs me.

I have option B, but I would rather be closer.

            And ideas?
I once went to a convention that actually listed peoples REAL first and last names on the front of their badges. I couldnt believe they exposed so much personal information like that. Luckily I had a dealer's badge that was left blank for staff to fill with a sharpie. I felt sorry for all the victims of SE experiments...

Anyway...theres several reasons why no hotel would give you a room without knowing who you really are...what if a dead body is discovered in your room and you've skipped town? the hotel would have a lot of explaining to do LE got there... However, considering shrdlu has posted that it has been done before, maybe its possible. Perhaps he would be willing to share some details....I'd be interested in how comfortable he felt staying there, but maybe hes a big mean biker looking type and doesnt have to worry about stuff like that..lol

I'd imagine that if a person with authority really wanted that info, the hotel might comply willingly or might even be forced into complying. I've heard from good sources that some hotels let LE monitor their internet connection provided in the rooms to bust criminals, so why not a guest list?

Maybe you should reconsider what companies/sites you give your credit card information to...

Consider buying what you can in stores. If you're buying on ebay use paypal and money orders when you can. Or for those obscure online purchases that only take cc's get a temporary visa gift card or an Ace pre-paid debt card. That way you limit the amount of damage that can be done by only giving them access to a set amount of funds. And remember "only you can stop forest fires" -Smokey the Bear.

two words... Fake ID. this isn't nearly as hard as it sounds, and may not even be illegal (i ask jurist or others to chime in if i'm wrong)

Many of us had fake IDs back in college since the nanny state wouldn't let us drink. They might not have been perfect, but they're "good enough" for bartenders. The same rule applies to hotels... if you make a booking under a fake name, the desk clerk just needs to see ID matching that name when you check in. These people aren't cops, they don't always know how to detect fake IDs. How about an international ID... do you know what a diver's license in Albeta looks like? I sure don't... neither does Bob On The Night Shift at the front desk of a hotel.

While it is illegal to lie about your identity to police, i don't know if it is a crime to do so to private institutions. If you are doing it with the explicit purpose of defrauding them (i.e. - Raoul Duke dashes across town to avoid paying a hotel bill) that's one thing, but if you have every intention of paying and simply don't give a real name... that's another.

You'll often need a credit card to hold a room... but sometimes corporate business cards can be used to book, etc. without your explicit name. So get creative... i'm sure that you can find a way to handle matters. If some dumbass kid in high school can buy beer, you can surely stay at a hotel without telling them your real name.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

oh man, the paranoia alone is a great reason to attend :)

i hope i can fill in the blanks -
one of the largest strip owners does train their front desk people on fake id's but it was only a brief training, no retraining (that i was aware of), not to mention people making <$10/hr probably don't really give a flying eff.

I have spent a few nights in a parking lot sleeping with the motor running. Head to the truck stop off the south end of the 5 at blue diamond, don't park where the trucks are but on the back side of the building, employee parking I believe it is. no one bugs ya at all and they have showers for $10 inside (leave your dna there).

Feds and hotel records - not without a court order (obviously not too hard) I dont know the inner workings of the Riv but another very close is doubtful to just hand em over. If they are looking an individual, yeah but not a complete list. These places protect their client lists like it fort knox

whoo hoo...only a week left and I am on my way back to Sin City!!

The south end of 15 is in San Diego (and the south end of the 5 is at the Mexican border). Might want to check again and/or clarify that :P

I'm thinking he probably meant 15 where it leaves Vegas on the south side.
