  • lots of new news, info, etc

So i just wrapped up a long phone call from Jared, aka Mr Kickass, who owns the Desert Lake range. I have plenty of new details, etc. So here's the rundown...

    Attendees
Currently, we have almost 20 people signed up for the Class-III special package. We have about a dozen people who are just going in as "basic" shooters... some of whom are bringing their own guns and some people are sharing, etc. (more on these latter folks in a bit)

    Firing Line Space
There will be four tables set up out on the range for the Class-III action. Multiple Class-III shooters will be able to shoot at once (i've been told at least two to three full-auto lanes will be going at once)

One thing i didn't know before... when the Class-III packages are happening, that particular range (the one just for us) will be dedicated to that enterprise only. Just people getting trigger time on their packages or possibly on the M-60 (more on that later). A nearby firing line (possibly not a private one) will be available for everyone else... folks waiting their turn at Class-III or just shooting/showing off their own guns can have fun there.

    Targets
The range has a whole array of interesting shit to shoot. Lots of steel targets (silhouettes, bulls eyes, etc. Even some cars are scattered all around)

We are allowed to bring and setup our own targets. This includes messy stuff as well as paper/cardboard. If people want to bring out melons, pumpkins, apples, or other fruit... that's totally fair game.

The only thing that's right out is tannerite. The range actually has some specific requests from the Boulder City police that tannerite or any other explosive/reactive targets not be used. Heh, maybe this has some relation to the big booms that are part of old DC-Shoot lore.

    Other Range Weapons
Thus far, no one has approached me about any special request rentals. I asked the range about a G3 rifle (i've just always wanted to fire one) and they said that this, as well as any other special request, would be $350 and ammo costs would be on top of that. I don't know if they do package deals or anything... but i doubt that i'm going in for any of that.

It is possible to obtain pistols and such from the range, but not as mere rentals. The range does offer "trainers" for $110 an hour. It is possible to go with two or three folks at a time on such a deal. You'd get to use some smaller stuff like pistols, etc. in this case. I know it's not a perfect deal... but i figured i'd mention it here.

There will be an M-60 sitting on the range, since our Class-III group is large. $100 gets you a 25-round belt of ammo there. Again, given that you can get 7.62x51mm for less than a dollar per round, that's a little bit expensive but most of the cost we're looking at here pertains to wear and tear on the gun. Post-86 Full Autos are a whole mess of costs in terms of steel and paperwork.

    People's Personal Weapons
Some people with shotguns asked me if they are cool to bring. They are. Yes, the range does have its own "dedicated shotgun" area, but that just refers to trap and skeet shooting. Shotguns are totally fine to bring out on the basic range area, as long as you're doing level shooting.

Big-bore fun is allowed... so bring your 454 Casull Redhawks and whatnot. The only thing i'm checking on (left the guy a voicemail just now) is .50 BMG. There is always a chance that the range isn't rated for that. I'll post when i get details there.

If you bring your own guns, please make clear to others whether or not people can try them out. I will have my 10/22 rifle, my .45, and one or two of my shotguns for people to try out. I'm going to try to limit that to people whom i actually know personally (which is most folks here, but still... please don't be offended if i don't have you on the special guest list there)

    Other Equipment
The range will have eyes and ears for anyone who needs them. The range will let us use their clubhouse / dining room for relaxation afterwards (from 10:00 to 11:00 is what i'm planning) as long as we just take care to not scuff up their wood tables when cleaning, etc. (I'm recommending that people swipe an airline blanket or two if they fly into town. that will provide a nice, soft surface upon which to do any cleaning, etc. and they're rather disposable after that if need be, heh.)

    Transportation / Hoover Dam
I'm going to send emails out tonight to all people who are confirmed with me, etc. so we can begin to figure out who is driving, who can give rides, who needs rides, etc. Please start thinking now about whether or not you want to see Hoover Dam after the shoot. There are two tour options. The tour of the Powerplant only costs $11 and takes about a half hour. The Full Dam Tour is $30 and takes an hour, with groups heading out at the top and bottom of each hour. I will be taking one of those two tours, haven't decided which yet. Give some thought to what, if any, tour options you would like to be a part of if you're coming to the shoot.

    Bonusy Goodness
everyone who has signed up at this point is going to get something special to use on the range and take home with them. it's cooler than a shirt and much more original than that.

i also plan on having a few prizes that i will make available for people who excel in one way or another. like i've said in the past, perhaps we'll have a few categories like...
    1. best marksmanship (whomever get the tightest grouping at 100 or 200 yards with ten rounds through my Ruger)

    2. best target destruction (maybe we'll have some sort of standard items that can be hit repeatedly, like baseballs or something, and see who can blow them to smithereens most effectively with whatever their gun holds.

    3. best weapon customization (whomever shows up with what the group deems to be the coolest weapon mod is the winner)

... i don't know, we'll just have to see what we can see, eh?

"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

but a Google search for "G3 rifle" yields somewhat better results.

Heh, of course... i could have meant a lot of things when i said i always wanted to shoot a G3. Maybe i meant the Mac workstation. There was, after all, that guy who blasted his G4 and put the video on the 'net. (a great fucking video, btw... it's part of the filler content. check it at that YouTube link)

I have two people in my group who responded today that they wanted to go shoot. I will be driving and can bring three, maybe four if they are friends, in my car.

Whether or not I am going to shoot is still up in the air but I'm going to try!

are they looking for the Class-III package or are they bringing their own hardware of any kind? at this point they're looking at $200 as opposed to $180 for the full-auto action.

i have you now confirmed as a basic and i'll put your two associates in as Class-III when i receive their full info from you. and people aren't backing out as much as just being a bit flexible with their plans. some definites have turned into maybes and i want to hedge my bets and prevent drastic losses. at present, our confirmed Class-III shooters outnumber basic shooters almost 2 to 1, which is the point of absolute financial equilibrium. we will make it all work, i'm certain... i just switched to the "full" $200 price for any new sign-ups from yesterday onward so that no last minute people throw anything out of balance. people can show up even on that day, but at $200 i know that they won't be causing me to frantically wish i had more basic shooters to cover the gap that $180 would create.

I'm a produce popper from way back, but some of the of the pistol stuff (on the Basic side of the berm) begs for some paper. I'll bring a stapler and some cardboard/paper, but will there be frames and stands?

Will we be standing on concrete or dirt? I might bring a tarp for shooting prone, if not...
