I can only verify the last three years. Did not know about it my first year at Defcon but I am pretty sure five years is the correct number.

Yes, and they have served more than shite burgers. :-)

Okie. I am an adverse creature and don't really like you people (Lie number 1). It has been posited by people I actually like and respect to do some kind of noobish thing to acquaint said noobs with the vagaries of that which is DefCon. Ok, so, if anyone is interested, I will pony up and attempt to speed school folks who are interested (Why, WHYWHYWHY do I do this to myself, why?). The speed topics would include: Why you shouldn't annoy Priest; how NOT to attend a party; "That guy is Roamer and don't poke the beast"; "I am not here for your personal benefit, gee, why don't you shower?" and the ever popular, "Guess what? It's not all about you!" For some of the ladies? "Computers really are cool" and, "Vegas: It's really NOT all about shopping."

Seriously, for anyone who desires a clue? We (that is the pontifical "we") are putting together a forum for the noobs and the nervous. Oldsters who have behavior issues are also welcome to attend. It's the least that can be done for a group of people I don't care a rats butt about (Lie number 2).

We will convene in the parking garage prior to the TBBQ. Or perhaps the powers that be will give us actual meeting space. Stay tuned.

      Regards,

      Valkyrie

It wasn't an actual question, but thanks for the thought.

At first when I read this thread, I didn't really give much credence to the concept of a n00b track/break out session/'forum' on Thursday. But the more I let it rattle around in my head, the more I start to believe it's not a horrible idea.

Granted there are logistical issues that may arise both from a conference as well as an attendee perspective, but it doesn't diminish the veracity of the original concept.

Perhaps TheCotMan can break this specific discussion off into another thread?

          Re: Defcon 17 suggestions

I'm looking forward to the Thursday stuff. Most likely start it in the afternoon around 1 or 2 pm to give people a chance to sleep in or arrive at the hotel first, then do a 1/2 day of newbie talks or say two workshops, then something in the evening.

I also have a content idea I wanted to run last year, but didn't have time to plan it. I'll do it this year for sure and will be writing up the rules and concept and ask for everyone's ideas. Basically it is a contest to see, and demonstrate, what team can bypass tamper evident tapes, seals, stickers, tags, envelopes, etc.

In the end I want everyone to understand how to bypass the crappy commercial "tamper proof" or "tamper evident" products out there. I'll provide advanced notice of all the products that will be used so teams can practice, and they will be judged on both total number defeated and time-to-defeat.

DT: Be sure to invite the CIA "Flaps and Seals" guys to the contest. They would make a good control group.

Definitely into the tamper proof stuff - including the concert type wrist bands...

Thursday would be a great time for mini-howtos IMHO.

I'm constantly asked to teach things during CON, but I'm always occupied with the HHV and the Mystery Challenge...

The ToxicBBQ isn't until later in the day, so the mid-morning/early afternoon would be ideal for things I believe...

As a first time Con goer I'm very excited about the Thursday option. I'm going to show up on Wednesday to get a wee bit of partying in before the partying so maybe nothing too early...

Unfortunately as of right now Defcon is canceled this year due to the recession. Sorry folks.

DefCon was canceled last year too. When are we going to have DefCon for reals?

                            Re: Defcon 17 suggestions

Couple thoughts after coming back and reading.

First, I would LOVE a Thursday set of newbie talks. Last year was my first, and I was hideously shy, but I'm planning on diving in this coming year, bringing my own soldering iron, and disposable laptop (that I don't mind reinstalling after the con lol).

Edited b/c I saw a specific thread towards the Newbie Thursday.

I don't think a girlfriend con or anything like that would be worth diddly. I know I couldn't convince my wife to come no matter what was going on in Vegas. Her reaction would be "You want me to take a vacation with you....except not see you but when you collapse exhausted into bed and night, and wake up and leave immediately in the morning?"

Last but not least, something I have wanted to do forever (aside from the fact that most of the games seem to be happening on college campuses), Humans Vs. Zombies! I just really want a reason to bring my Nerf guns...

                            M.

HHV basics of soldering etc. (even if this didn't exist, I plan on sitting down in the HHV w/ my iron this year and just getting solder all over shit until someone helps me...j/j)
I am hoping to give a 2 hour or so presentation on soldering as a regular track talk if it is accepted during the call for papers.
