It's not a bad idea at all. I will see what we can do and let you know if we can pull it off. If it's feasible for us (equip/space) then we would love a volunteer.

Cool, well if you can get the equipment/space issues resolved feel free to PM me to arrange the details.

If they have a projector at the Info booth, why not just have them run the updates along side the schedule/whatever else is up there.

I'm sure someone could whip up a good design to have all the info present on the screen and not cluttered.

I believe that's what was going on last year, but the design was so terrible that it was really hard to read. Also, it didn't seem to work very well. Perhaps someone tried to write something that polled their API, but none of my tweets ended up there.

Does anyone know if touch apps (IE the twitter app, the facebook app, etc) use HTTPS by default?

I'd love to keep up to date on tweets, but I'd rather not risk my login details getting sniffed. (And carrying around a 1000HE so I can be sure to only be using HTTPS and no script and all that good stuff would get old quick)

No, and last year they split a separate "Twitter on iPhone" section out on the Wall of Sheep (so there was Twitter on iPhone on one side and everything else on another)

The first thing I did on my iPhone when I got to Defcon was shut off WiFi.

Tweety uses HTTPS. You can do a google search for that information.

Wow, so Tweety actually does have a differentiating feature

TwitterFon also does HTTPS (just recently).

Also, I would like to suggest https://www.twitterfall.com/ for the wall. You can setup searches, speed, animation, and even hide the panels so it works perfectly for a wall.

Just checked it out myself, looks good...I agree that it would work well for a well and save a lot of time trying to create something that would probably end up being very similar.

Looks like Twitter can be used as a DoS amplifier this year. Nothing like X number of random people showing up (for certain values of X greater than maximum occupancy of Room Y) for a gathering. :D

Ahh.. if we had only had it when we were at the AP... the calls of "Orgy at pool 2!!" would have been much more efficient!

                            Re: Twitter?

So I have been officially assigned to Twitter Queen and will be roaming the halls posting and RT #Defcon Twitter posts. If you are not already following the official Defcon twitter do it. I will be trying to get someone ( who has volunteered) to set up a stream in the contest area that will show the official posts and the #Defcon tweets.

I will be tweeting contest info, Schedule updates, Room info ( as in full ), Cool pictures of events, Re tweeting requests from people ( if possible), Following the chatter on twitter and re tweeting the good stuff, posting special announcements, like super secret swag give away in the contest area first 100 to get there get a prize, " How did the Hacker Pimps smuggle in a live Donkey?" and what's going on in each party. I'll also be posting the location of Cool things that are happening randomly, What I see etc. I'll be hitting the ground running on Thursday. Twit pics will be popular, however will obey by defcon's policy of no faces unless approved/requested. You might even see things before everyone else does, or before it's too late. So subscribe. You DO NOT have to follow my twitter account, I will be using both my own and the official twitter to post from.

So that's that. If you want to be one of the people to submit to me exclusive information before the con, or during the con as an on the scene twitter'er (jeesh) for reposting, then send me an email at nikita at defcon dot org.

                              Re: Twitter?

I'm setup on Twitter personally, but I dont know that I will be using it for the Geo Challenge. Its a thought. If people ask for it, then perhaps I will, to send out updates as far as team statuses. I was considering writing my own SMS script so that when teams complete a level, all competing teams receive a SMS alerting them to the fact. But that would require teams to provide me with a SMS address, probably containing their phone number. So twitter may be the way to go as far as privacy concerns, but not as far as automation goes. Maybe I can write a script to auto post to twitter.

Another scripting task for me before con starts..

It's interesting that you think people would be more inclined to trust Twitter, with their strong history of security breaches and a gigantic target of attack, over you, a long-standing member of the community. Then again, people are more likely to be drowned into anonymity on Twitter.
