Re: Intro to Hacking - Discussions

I wouldn't mind doing a short talk on crypto. My sensei is Lars Knudsen (of integral cryptanalysis fame), and I'd say I could do a 15-20 minute talk on RSA and AES or whatever people want me to talk about.

    disclaimers...

    1. i wasn't present at any thursday talks besides DC101

    2. i'm biased on this, given that i had my own opinion before this was proposed

    having said that...

    1. everyone who was at the intro talks that spoke to me about things that day was highly disappointed. of particular note was the intro to lockpicking talk.

IMPORTANT CLARIFICATION - this talk was in no way affiliated with me or my staff. we were not advised it was happening or consulted about who was speaking there. (and i'm absolutely not asserting that it was our place to be in that decision at all... but lots of people did assume that we somehow had put that together so there was a lot of indirect apology all weekend, etc)

    2. while there are certain useful aspects to intro talks, it's a huge schedule killer having them like that on thursday. thursday already was established in a number of ways and people's time is already so frenzied between load-in and thursday events. so both type of attendees (organizers and newbies) are torn between tasks at hand (logistics and events, respectively) or these talks (at participants or audience, respectively)

again... i'm still a bit sleep-deprived and we're all pretty sick, so these thoughts could be coming out half-formed, but i'm just reporting my own initial thoughts.

I think thats a pretty awesome idea. There will be some stuff that is defcon specific, and not of much use to some people, but there will be a good deal of info given at dc101 that could be of interest to a lot of the people who get a chance with the TTB.

DefCon also needs a rule against over usage of exclamation points!

Apparently it comes up every year and fails every year. Maybe next year is the year.
This is a point of confusion. There were two different events:
    Intro to Defcon
    Intro the Hacking.

The item you link to is the event "Intro to Hackin" which has no leaders/organizer and has been cancelled.
The thread where this reply was posted "Defcon 101: A lurker's Guide to Defcon" (which was Intro to Defcon) is still on, and still being actively supported.

The threads for Intro To Hacking as an event was relocated to New Ideas in case someone else decides to lead that.

I will be purging the contents of that close forum that contains the non-functional "Intro To Hacking".

Re-stating, the Intro to Defcon called. "DefCon 101: A Lurkers Guide to DefCon," has had no announcement of being canceled.

I thought I closed the "Intro to Hacking" but it looks like I just made it invisible but available. Let me fix that, which will break the link you have, but avoid more confusion on this.

Sorry to the organizer of this event which is still on, as far as I know. It was my mistake in failing to fully partition the unsupported event away.

Maybe the leaders/organizers would like me to move this thread to New Ideas so this topic isn't a point of conflusion. (?) Let me know.
Any other threads should be dumped in New ideas to avoid confusion in this space?

If I may suggest, could this possibly be a yearly thing? I will not be able to attend Defcon 17 due to deployment, but I will be returning in time to go to Defcon 18 and would like to get as much as possible out of it, including the basics if possible. Thanks.

I was under the impression the idea was a speed presentation before the main event starts, like even an hour or two early while the main show is warming up? That way it wouldn't get in the way of everyone else, noobs or even pros who are visiting the con for the first time get a taste of what's to come, and what they wish to keep an eye out for?
Yes you are free to ask, but it doesn't mean I'm going to give you an answer.
