See. The beauty of this reply is that is does not confirm or deny anything. Really, if there is a rumor that is true or not, someone knows about the rumor regardless of how accurately any such rumor reflects any future reality.
A rumor exists when someone mentions it.
If a person mentions a rumor, then someone knows about the rumor, because someone is a person that mentioned it.
