Status of The Summit for Defcon 17

Last year I asked about contests and events planned for this year, and I've asked this year a few times, with no response on The Summit happening for Defcon 17.

Just now, I sent an email to Hackajar to ask about this using the email address he has associated with his forum account, and I pointed to this thread by URL.

Let's see if that generates a response on this topic.

so is there no official Summit party happening thursday night? still hoping for confirmation on that one, because i don't want the Vegas 2.0 crew thinking that we're not considering them at all or stepping on their toes.

from what i can see, however, there is nothing mentioned anywhere and no sub-forum created for that happening.

hence, thursday after the BBQ gets my vote for sure... a comfortable time with no rush for the people coming from the park and wanting a shower. maybe 21:00? is that too early or too late?

It was my understanding the EFF fundraiser was still on for Thursday. We are holding the Top of the Riv for them. Has something changed?

Would this be the Summit that Hackajar and Vegas 2.0 work on, or another fund raiser for the EFF? (There have been a few fund raisers for the EFF... Is the dunk tank going to be around this year for the EFF too? If so, I need to activate that forum too.) If this is the Summit, we've not heard much from Hackajar here, about it. His mention about an update in 12 hours is the most I've seen on it.

All,

It comes with great regret that Vegas 2.0 will NOT be hosting theSummit Thursday night. While Vegas 2.0 will be at DEF CON this year, we do not plan to roll out this event due to a major life changing event that has affected the principals behind this event.

On February 11, 2009 my son passed away as a result of complications from his Bone Marrow Transplant. The core group of Vegas 2.0 has been very close (some of us for 15 years or more) and this has been a very trying time for us all.

Please free up the "Top of The Riv" on Thursday night so that other groups my bid for its use. We apologies for not notifying DEF CON staff sooner, as this has become a last minute decision.

i am very sorry to hear this news, man. you're in our thoughts. in lieu of the Summit event, would it be impolite to ask if you'd allow any of us to make donations directly to the EFF in memory of him?

Not at all! In fact, the group is putting money together equal to what we spend on the event (about $2,000) to go directly to the EFF in lieu of actually throwing the event.

As a parent I can't begin to imagine what that was like. Terribly sorry and a massive shout out to you for keeping it together so well.

For those of you nationally, I would recommend Make a Wish foundation. They have been very supportive of us throughout the years. They do not just do one thing for the kids and move on. They checked in with us 2 - 3 times a year and also invited him to many functions like Las Vegas Metro (local LEOs) Make a wish Christmas, Make A Wish night at local Ice Cream parlors and Make a Wish night at local kids shows on the Strip.

For those in the San Francisco Bay Area, I would recommend the Koret Family House. They are the local equivalent to "Ronald McDonald's House" for families with long term care that need somewhere to stay.
