I have been through walk through metal detectors hundreds of times, the first thing I have to do is sit down and remove my docs and put them on a box that goes through the x-ray conveyor, then I have to lace them back up again. A real hassle, especially if there are a lot of people in line.

luggage that won't count againts ya

Tell the guy that one of your suitcases has ski boots in it. They usually will not count that against your total. When I fly and have one bag too many I get around it that way.

Of course flying to Las Vegas in August with ski boots is probably enough to get every fed within 250 miles on your back.
