    Hey g3k,

Thanks for providing your thoughts. I've got a response (no anger or nothing -- like I said, love discourse, never offended by it), but I've also got a bunch of stuff I'm doing this week. I'll hit this back up with a reply, probably over the weekend. :)

    Have a good work-week.

Why the fuck did you report this? The reason makes no sense, there's nothing out of line with the post that I can see, not to mention the fact that the blogs are pretty much unpoliced anyway and the user can write whatever they want. What are you trying to accomplish?

I just checked, and we do still include the notice on the page that loads confirming the port reporting with the text the user reporting the post wants to provide:

              An addendum to this:

The rules for the Blogs are published, and they are the lest restrictive space on the forums. At this time, the only 2 things that are against the rules in people's blogs are:
              1) No spam
              2) Nothing illegal (request, planning, direction, or action, etc.)

              And one more thing...
Isn't sending these user-reported posts to /dev/null for all mods and public to see, just the best thing ever? Now such reports don't need to get sent to moderator email addresses so all of them can jump in and act on something that was acted on by the first mod that got there.

Additionally, lurkers and users get examples of failure and success and see how things are handled.

This kind of transparency is so cool!

So, for the last month or so, I've been attending some sort of *VENDOR* *SECURITY PRODUCT* "tech" talk that is more like a marketing lecture via conf call. I'm not too impressed with the *SECURITY PRODUCT*, to tell you the truth...but it impresses me less when it's advertised to the nerds as a series of technical presentations when it is obviously not. Attending these lectures is mandatory.

So, for the last month, I've been spending my Monday mornings looking like I'm logged in to this lecture, and use the hour and alternative phone to prank call some elevator in BFE for shits and giggles.

"Take off your pants! Now salute me! I can see you in the camera, motherfucker, MOVE-IT-SHAKE-IT-DO-IT!"

                Yeah. I never claimed I wasn't a fucking hypocrite. :)

However, I think I've been discovered. The number to the elevator now re-routes to a CO in BFE, and I'm not sure what it does, but it sure is very interesting. Its an automated dealie, all DTMF-operated, that gives you tons of information about the CO, it's equipment, and allows you to route yourself through their switches and make outbound calls. I think. It sure sounds like it, anyways. Unlike any number I've ever had before.

It's a really cool find. Thus, Monday mornings are about to get a whole lot more interesting. =) But I think for the remainder of the week....well, I think I might slide that number past my buddy, Steve. He's unemployed -- he has more time on his hands than I do, these days. I just have Monday mornings free.

I just never outgrew the phone thing, I guess. Sometimes I feel like a real sophomoric brat, with all the prank calls and dicking around I do...STILL. You'd think one would outgrow pranks.

Another thing I like to do on Mondays is assist the networking department newbies with solutions to tech support calls. Whenever they get a call to the tune of "I don't have a connection to the *whatever*", I tell a few idiots that they don't need to login to a switch to see if some cat5 is getting link...just unplug the cable and put it to your tongue.

"This method will also tell you what port speed its set to...one steady jolt for 10/100, 3 quick jolts for 10/100/1000! Tons simpler than logging into the router...I can't believe you guys haven't heard about this!"

You wouldn't believe how often that works.

Tired. Must sleep. The search for DC lodging is looking pretty grim. I'll keep searching, but I don't have much time or money, these days. Accidentally fucked up my finances on a Cisco 2821 ballah-ass router, as well as a ladies Movado diamond ballah-ass watch. Whoops! My bad. :(

First off, thank you everyone who inquired about my knee surgery. The surgery was a success and I am healing up nicely. I'm just about back on my feet and able to return to work. I also have left over pain medication I can sell to hippies and school kids to subsidize my income.

Since we're all geeks here, I figured you would get a kick out of this..its the video of my knee surgery. Note, its from the camera they stuck in my leg, theres minimal blood, but if you get easily squicked out by medical shit, give this one a pass..

The schedule for Defcon 17 was just published and, keeping these things in mind, I’ve been thinking about what talks I want to check out. My focus this year will be the hardware hacking stuff. I plan to bring my soldering kit and my Eee PC so I can check that bad ass Defcon Badge out :D

                        Thursday

We’ll be arriving around noon on Thursday, and my major plan is to check out the pool. However I might take a stroll around the Lounges and check out the DC Network Session if I feel so inspired.

                        Friday

Friday, the plan is to attend the Hacking the Badge talk. I am interested in getting an overview of how the badge works and maybe find out some neat ways to customize it. I’m definitely not up for the Badge Competition since I’m a beginner at electronics hacking. Regardless, it will definitely be fun :D

After that session, there is the talk about hacking the Wiimote for disabled users. It’s short, and I’m interested in Human-Computer interaction and UI.

Finally I’ll be checking out Jason Scott’s talk later that afternoon. He did the fantastic documentary about text-based RPG’s and he is a really fun speaker.

There are 2 more sessions that evening that look pretty interesting. “Injecting Electromagnetic Pulses into Digital Devices” (which I’m interested in just because of that scene in Neil Stephenson’s book, the Cryptonomicon) and the “Meet the Feds” Panel. I’m concerned that the former may be less interesting for me in actuality, so it is not a high priority. The “Meet the Feds” panel actually looks pretty fun; I'm impressed at the number of agencies represented by panel participants.

                        Saturday

Saturday’s talks aren’t quite as intriguing to me, but there are a few that look fun. The demo of a 1964 coupled modem (that’s so War Games!) and the “TBA” talk by Adam Savage of Mythbusters are on my list. I’m sure the line for that will be incredible. I might skip it and watch the video replay ;)

                        Sunday

There’s the history of Proximity cards, Lockpicking Forensics, and the talk about Magic and Social Engineering. The latter in particular looks like it will be very entertaining as they will have real magicians!

Finally, later on Sunday there’s an interesting looking Cognitive Psychology talk about the Psychology of Security. I am not sure when we’re slated to fly out of Las Vegas, but I’ll definitely try to make that one if I can.
