  • Beer Cooling at DEFCON 18

Just letting everyone know... the Beer Cooling Contest will be returning to DEFCON again this summer. There were rumors that this time around we might be moved to the indoor contest area as opposed to being out in the parking lot. While i can't confirm that yet, i'll do my best to get more details there and post them.

Depending on the circumstances, we might have two categories... self-powered and electric-powered. Regardless, all contraptions must be home-built and not consist of pre-packaged commercial products.

More details to come as soon as we learn things from the contest staff.
"I'll admit I had an OiNK account and frequented it quite often… What made OiNK a great place was that it was like the world's greatest record store… iTunes kind of feels like Sam Goody to me. I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Indoors will be interesting . . . We might have to be a bit more careful about spillage. Carpet tends to retain beer spills long after the party is over . . .

yeah, i plan to cover this in a future post when i update the rules, etc (when i get confirmation that we're inside) but my notion was to issue every participating team a 6' x 6' piece of plastic sheeting and a towel. (always know where your towel is!)

there will likely be a rule stating "if you have a small spill... that's ok, since accidents happen. if you have a medium spill, we'll be upset by the loss of valuable beer but we will not hold it against you too much. if you have a large spill or otherwise make a big mess, you'd better have your plastic sheeting in a smart position and use your towel wisely, since you're responsible to the hotel if you can't clean things up adequately."

I can't wait! Last year I did not see any electric systems, so I hope that if my team build's a chiller, that we are not competing in our own category. When will the rules be confirmed?

all rules and facts will be clarified and posted on the BCCC section of deviating.net by St. Patty's Day.

According to http://deviating.net/bccc/, the BCC will be outside at noon on Friday. Is that the official plan, Deviant? I want to make sure to see the event this year. And it may just be me, but the BCC is prime material for its own shirt, no!? :-) How sweet would a DEFCON BCC shirt be? Pretty friggin' sweet that's how.....

there is talk that we'll be allotted a space to use in the indoor contest area. if that's the case (and i'll confirm that ASAP) then we'll be easy to spot. i still promise plenty of non-ideal temperature beers, even if we don't have the blazing vegas sun to raise them to challenging levels.

also, if we have an indoor space, then i will create two categories this year:
              1. fully self-sufficient contraptions

              2. contraptions that run on electric power (from an AC source)

it would be sweet, i agree, but what with the DEFCON Shoot shirt taking up most of my garment planning resources, i don't know if i can add another such project to my own slate.

tell you folk what, however... if there's someone with a decent idea who wants to make such a shirt and run with it, i'll give it my blessing. sell them, swag them, whatever... all i ask is that you set aside one for me and a couple for prizes perhaps.

I'm assuming the other rules will remain the same? No internal reservoir, 60 seconds for beer to exit system once it enters, impart no "off-color" tastes . . . etc.

                saxdr and moonshine are in.

If someone can supply the art, I think I can find someone to make some shirts for us.

Here' s one from my guy, dsc. It's a lil' crude and simple, but sometimes less is more. I may be wrong, but I think it was done in MSFT Paint.

Correction---that is MS Paint AND MS Word. Lets give credit where credit is due.

What really make this work is the arrow explaining the melting of ice.
                            Thats art.

Vector art is best, but if its rasterized, full size is needed.
Probably going on a black shirt...

We'll have to see what Deviant Ollam thinks of dsc's handywork before doing this for sure. I talked to dsc about it yesterday (before his art session) and we were trying to decide how many shirts would be appropriate to order. I'm not sure how many people attend the BCCC. dsc would need to update his Word Art to include "contraption" in the title.

We also had another colleague working on a more "refined" piece of artwork, but I'm not sure he's going to finish it. He had artist block -- or some crazy shit like that.... :-) If he does, I'll post it here for comparison.
