Just got back from Vegas, and managed to scope out ammo costs at The Gun Store, and a couple of Big 5's. No cheaper than any other brick and mortar retailer I've seen in the last 6 months, and for the most part, it's actually more expensive across the board. Best bet is to pack your own, Deviant has a great guide that touches on this. Or have it shipped directly to your hotel... Or bring a lot of cash to buy a little bit of lead.

The Gun Store gets a lot of mixed reviews, it's very "touristy", with the heavy advertising on the strip for the full-auto gun rentals.

When I was last in Vegas and I wanted to do the full auto rental thing, I went to Discount Firearms, Inc and they were pretty good. They are more of a "real" gun store and only do the tourist/rental thing as a side business.

I can't vouch for their ammo prices since I haven't checked, but here's the site:
        http://www.discountfirearmsinc.com/

I have a question for everyone as well, as this is my first defcon and defcon shoot. What do you all do with your guns afterward? I'm going to be in Vegas the whole week after Defcon so I'm really not sure what to do with them.

I looked at shipping them back home but that seems like it might get complicated, since the shipping carriers only want to ship from FFL to FFL.

Quick field cleaning to keep them clean enough until I get home, remove all firing pins and keep them on me, and keep them in a very big case with very big locks both on the weapons themselves and the case.

            .
Unfortunatly you can only ship firearms from one certified dealer to another, so shipping is expensive and a very limited option.

I have a Pelican case that I store all of my firearms in, then pad lock the case, then chain the case to a solid structure in my room. The last thing is obscurity, I do not host parties in my room, I do not let others in my room that I do not know (I request no cleaning staff in my room as well). I also don't share which room I am staying in unless it is someone that I do trust. This isn't 100% but it has worked when ever I have traveled with firearms in the past.

Yo Yo Yo.... I'm finally back in town... been out of the country for awhile.... DC shoot... glad to see its back as well.
Someone mentioned long range. Last year I was the one on that hill with a Rem 700 .308 shooting at a 10" rock 800 yards out. Line of sight to target was good, had a hill backstop. There was shrubs in the path but were low enough to see any person walking... I did watch for clear shooting areas before setting up to shoot.
As for running 2 ranges at the same time. IF and only IF a new path to the long range backstop is found, then I would agree to it, otherwise the path I found put you in front of barrels on the pistol side.

I am just getting settled back in here, and should be able to make it this year to the shoot. I will be bringing a few of my weapons...

                Nothing too complicated...

I might give them a quick wipe down, then I just toss them in cases in the trunk of my Green Accord and park it on the third floor of the parking garage near the elevator and move the hide-a-key from the front driver's wheel well to the rear passenger wheel well (just to confuse anyone who might know my regular behavior patterns! )

Then, I just act nonchalant and DON'T TELL ANYONE THAT THEY'RE THERE!

Actually, you can ship guns to yourself in addition to FFLs and manufacturers. You just cant ship them to other people. I've mailed handguns back to myself before.

I was always told that sending any firearm through the federal mail system was a crime, again i never verified this as fact just assumed it would be true due to interstate shipping laws. I also heard that it is no longer a "firearm" if the fireing pin is removed. Any validity to this?

There is a distinction here that needs to be called out. Private carrier != federal mail system. Sending something via UPS or FedEX is different than sending it via USPS. That said, you can mail firearms through the USPS provided the recipient has some form on file that basically says 'Mr postman, you aint liable for shit'. Found that out from a buddy who's a 'coffee table' FFL dealer. So if you are going to ship a firearm to yourself, use a private carrier and make sure its sent signature required.

In regards to the firing pin, thats just a bunch of bunk. If something is considered by the ATF to be a firearm, then its a firearm; regardless of what you do to it. The receiver portion is what they consider to be the firearm. That's why even a stripped AR-15 lower receiver has to be transferred through an FFL but every other part can be mailed to your door.

In short, once a gun, always a gun. There are some rare exceptions such as Title 1 firearms produced before 1899 that cease being 'a gun' largely because they are no longer considered safe to shoot and have become 'wall hangers'.

Re: DEFCON 18 Shoot information thread

Here's what my research came up with:

Handguns through USPS, FFL to FFL only.
Long guns through USPS, can mail to yourself as long as the recipient doesn't open the package (how would they know anyway?)

Private carrier -- required to declare to the carrier that it's a gun
Fedex -- One party has to have an FFL... "FedEx will only accept shipments of firearms when either the shipper or recipient is a licensed manufacturer, licensed importer, licensed dealer or licensed collector"

UPS -- Need to take it to a full-on "UPS Customer Center", not a UPS store or Mailboxes, etc or any kind of retail UPS pickup location. Otherwise, they seem to have the best policy, allowing all shipments "from and between persons not otherwise prohibited from shipping firearms by [law]". You have to use "Next Day Air Saver" though for handguns.

So it looks like UPS is the way to go for private carrier.

Might want to print these out in case of argument with the clerk:

Even though by law you don't have to have an FFL to ship, only to receive, some FFLs will only accept shipments from other FFLs. It pays to have a good relationship with a dealer or two.
