Re: Reviving PokerCon?
Charity event: I had initially gone down the charity road, but this issue is actually a pretty big snag, and one of the reasons that a previous reincarnation of PokerCon did not make it off the ground. Charity events can get difficult to manage and approve (the Nevada regulations are mind-numbing), so this will probably not be a charity event. I did initially feel bad about going down this road, but really, there are many other opportunities for charity events at DEFCON, this event just won't be one of them.
Prizes: I have a few leads but I have not pursued them beyond "yes I can supply a prize" yet. Also, prizes could be another issue with getting the event approved. Officially speaking, as of right now, there are no prizes other than pride. That's not to say that there won't be prizes, but I want to get this thing approved first.
Tables/space: Tables and space would be hotel/con provided. While I have given my preferences for times, space will likely be determined by the con staff based on availability; given that this would be a new and unofficial contest, I'm fully expecting to get the short straw and understand that. We'll go with whatever time and space we get.
Cards: Paper cards are inexpensive; right now I am thinking of using standard paper cards perhaps until the last/last few tables, then maybe move to some plastic cards.
Chips: Chips will probably be the most expensive item in the budget. I'd love to get customized "DEFCON" chips, but customized chips can really push up the price quickly.
Volunteers: I have several volunteers so far, but again I haven't gone past "I wouldn't mind dealing" since we're waiting on approval. Ideally, we would have dealers for every table throughout the event, but that would take a minimum of 10 dealers (assuming 100 player and 10 players for table), and I don't know that we'll have that yet. At the least, players can deal the first few tables although I would not prefer that option. As always, any volunteers (for any portion of the event) are much appreciated.
Entry fee: My goal for the entry fee is keeping it as low as possible while still having a budget to pay for all the necessary supplies. Donations may help to keep the fee even lower.
