A few years ago before i had real hard cases, i asked and was allowed to fly with a soft locked suitcase, with a hard metal ammo case inside of it. They said as long as the gun is inside a hard case, and that case or an outer case is locked that works.

Might be an option for people bringing pistols that dont want to buy a case.

It's an option, but it's probably a poor choice. Smaller cases can disappear out of larger soft case, even a locked one. A lock on a soft-sided case is hardly a deterrent.

as long as there is a way to secure (as in, lock) them without using a TSA compliant lock. many suitcases nowadays (both cheap ones as well as nice ones like my buddy's Rimowa) use combination locks but they have a TSA override keyhole. that isn't sufficient, unless you disable that separate mechanism from the inside somehow.

some people purchase hasps and drill/bolt them on existing cases. this will change the functionality a bit (and surely alter the look of the case) but it would allow you to affix a proper padlock.

Those would pass technically, in that they are "hard sided." However, I don't think anyone in their right mind would trust firearms -especially expensive firearms- to cheap suitcases that a monkey-brained baggage handler can pick with a paperclip.

My preference is for Pelican cases.

I've actually had Jet Blue employees ask if I was flying armed, and did I need to go through the armed check in? They were very professional, and quite discrete about it.

Of course, living in a state that doesn't require the foolishness of CCW permits, they may be more used to it than other places.

USAir did that to me too, but I'm not associated with LE, a little scary, I assume if I hadn't been honest the layered security that is suppose to be at the airport would have caught up to the fact. :-|

Actually, though, you bring up a good point, the lack of proper secure storage is the reason I've never brought any guns to DC.

I can see pistols being a problem but they will fit in a hotel room safe assuming you actually trust those(not). For long arms I bring a key, and a combination cable lock, and secure them to something that will be time consuming and a PIA to get into. Of course everything is insured which would be the least of my concern if something was stolen.

Regarding the thread topic... Don't fly JetBlue... they have stupid rules that forbid you from putting ammunition in the same locked case as the gun, and strange definitions that seem to imply you can't ship different types of guns in the same case (rifle/pistol/shotgun), and arbitrary limits on the number of guns per case.

well, the regulations do state that it's ok for a device that doesn't cause interference... and a GPS unit only receives data,

Radio receiver operation is banned on planes too. Receivers send out a good amount of IF noise.

It's probably an overly paranoid regulation like most of them but it's there.

While nothing in-room is going to be secure enough, there are some steps that anyone can take to prevent theft or tomfoolery with their firearms. Good locks, cases, chains, etc. Removal of firing pins before and after the DC Shoot. The rule of partying elsewhere, and flat out responsibility of not advertizing that you have firearms in your room to the entire con. Surely people will see a good number of us arriving at the hotel, and leaving/coming back from the shoot with cases and ammo cans, but that doesn't mean you need to tell everyone about your uber sweet AR upstairs. My 2¢, YMMV, etc. etc. etc.

A bigger concern is what to do with the guns at your hotel room with strangers poking in with free alcohol just to hang. Sure they are locked up or chained to some immovable object, but there is always the doubt, especially when folks see locks they just have to test their lock pick set....
