I guess a hostel is still better than sleeping poolside. Probably a lower incidence of penii being drawn upon one's face, anyway.

isn't hooters hotel still a distance away?

I went to the RIO last year for the Penn&Teller show, I noticed it was kind of off by itself. Isn't the next big hotel Ceasers?

The Rio is across the freeway from Caesars. It's about 2 miles front door to front door.
It's a bitch to walk it in the Summer... in 110 degrees F.

There are thousands of places to get a room in Vegas. And a most have huge taxi stands so getting around is quick. And Vegas cabs carry up to four ppl for the price of one. Ask me anything about Vegas and if I don't know, I will find the answer!

Isn't there a shuttle running out of the Rio to other related casinos?
Why walk when you can ride?

Yea, there is a shuttle to other Harrah/Caesar Entertainment Group properties. ADK just has a vest interested in pushing people to stay at the Stratosphere ($$$).

The Rio shuttle operates seven days a week from 1000 hrs to 0100 hrs. There is no set arrival/departure schedule, but average wait time is suppose to be 30 minutes. Also, no luggage is allowed on the shuttle.

I wonder if the "no luggage" restriction applies to a laptop backpack...

                        Re: Hotels Near the Rio

Last year, stayed in the Palms as a result of a Groupon deal scored by a friend. Not a bad hotel, and would stay there again. However, that stay just reinforces why I always try to stay in the con hotel, especially at Defcon. When you're working an event and need to be there at a certain time, having to deal with a cab (even though pretty much every hotel near the strip in LAS has a full taxi stand) and the logistics thereof... or worse, making the hike in Vegas climate, even early in the morning... is a pain in the ass. It is NICE not having to deal with such things, especially if you have to make the trek back and forth several times during the day, or the drunken post-party stumble back at night. Unless you have a specific reason NOT to stay in the con hotel, I suggest you do so, because it IS a hell of a lot more convenient.

I am staying at the Gold Coast. It is a mile from the Rio. The prices aren't bad either.

last year TOOOL put half of our Lockpick Village staff at the Gold Coast. The cost was more than a 50% savings to the Rio. Transport was still enough of an issue (like people spoke of in other posts here) that this year we're putting everyone at the Rio. (Eventhough that means 3- or 4-to-a-room in order to keep costs down)

If you are ok with staying at the non-con-hotel, then the Gold Coast is one of your best choices for DEFCON.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

The Rio was not in my budget. There seems to be plenty of options to commute to and from the Gold Coast. Inconvenient? Yes. Affordable. Yes.
