      Good point.

I have pushed the issue up for the mods and gave a week for comment. If none of the mods complain, and nobody else is interested, then you'll be the new leader of this event.

One week also matches the one week for anyone else to respond to this thread, too.

I'll use Nikita's comment above as implicit confirmation that this event is authorized conditional on leadership.

I think he is trying to convince you to not attend, or if he wants you to attend, then discourage other people from showing up. Isn't logic *awesome*? :-)

For the first time ever on DC Forums I have an avatar. Will I wear it at the meet? Eh, depends on how drunk I am.

I plan on being there. I haven't committed to anything else at con this year, so this will be the first. Of course, I don't get invited to anything except this meet, and parties that don't actually exist, so that's not a strong endorsement. I'll be wearing an avatar badge, but the form that will take has yet to be decided. Though, I can say, it most definitely will not be a cod piece.

Last year was my first forum meet, and it was awesome to put faces to the names on the posts around here. I suck at trivia, but I have an excuse. ;)

Nobody gets "invited" to anything at DefCon (unless it is literally someone's private party in their personal room(this includes huge but PRIVATELY funded events in case you were whining about that instead)), "you" just show up to stuff and see how it goes. If you can't do that then you will just sit around waiting for non-existent "invites" all the time. Everything that is on the schedule is open invite to everyone. If it isn't on the schedule but "every one knows about it" it's open invite. Beyond that what more do you want to do? Wander the hotel hallways if you are that bored, someone will invite you in for a drink.

Not trying to be real mean here but this little piece of "wambulance" ticks me off every time I hear it. Defcon is what YOU make of it, not what others make of it FOR you. Dont sit around waiting for "invites" to anything. Just go. If "they" don't want you there, go somewhere else.

edit: even for those privately funded, "invite only" parties, people have gotten in to them quite easily if they tried even a little bit instead of sitting around waiting for it to happen. It's a hacker con, hack your environment a little, what's gonna happen if you fail? Nothing, except you won't be in the party and that was the reality before you tried so what have you lost?

Damn, I guess I'm not as funny as the voices inside my head tell me I am.

What can I say? Some garments just never go out of style. Speaking of which, Cuddles, you in this time?

                    Abyssknight,

Don't feel bad, I read your post and sort of saw it with the tongue and cheek humor I believe was intended. Now as far as invites go eris is correct about not needing one to any formal event and with a bit of effort you can go anywhere, however I want to formally invite those voices in your head to the forum meet.

I know sometimes on forums since people cannot see body language and often do not know the writers personality, - humor and pithy comments are often taken as not intended. I also believe that the tone of a forum itself is sometimes misinterpreted by new users or "lurkers" as un-inviting for the same reason when they read the responses that are targeted back at a poster.

Luckily for all of us interested and involved in the hacker community we are probably the most open minded, non judgmental and welcoming type of people on this planet. So whether it be the voices in your head, a first time attendee to Defcon or an old telephone phreaker, EVERYONE should feel they have a formal Invitation to the Forum Meet.

Not only do you get to meet others and form friendships in an inviting atmosphere, the forum allows you to keep in contact all year long no matter how far geographically challenged people are.

Holy shit.. When did we go from "Let's have a forum meet" to "Let's all sit around and sing kumbaya" ? What the fuck?

After spending most of my life as a nasty bastard I found its just as much fun to be pleasant. Besides If the world is going to end this weekend, why not go out on a nicer note!
