  • DEF CON 19 Contest OPEN!

Hi guys! The short story contest is open for buisness now!

    Exciting news!
    1. Depending on turn out this year we may combine the stories into a comic book sized book available for sale ( for a few dollars) at the DC Swag booth. That all depends on the level and amount of stories we get in if it's worth it we may try. Otherwise we might combine all three years at DEF CON 20. Well see.

    2. THEME for this year!! The theme for your stories should fit somewhere into the realm of a retro dime store exploitation novel! We're looking for 007, Spy vs Spy, double secret agents who are battling robot sharks with laser beams..... We want drama, espionage, science fiction, hacker vigilantes, and gum shoe! Give us your best Hacker version of Black Dynamite, Aeon Flux or the ever classic BOND! Bonus points if you design a book cover for your piece! In fact I hear this theme is along the same lines of what Neil is looking for in the Art contest this year.... I think the phrase coined is "Hack'Sploitation" Neil will post more on this later.

For more information on 'sploitation art check out this wiki: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Exploitation_film
      Also see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spy_film

    3. Prizes for this year :
People's Choice will win: Free entry and $20 swag credit.
First place winner will receive: Free entry and $40 swag credit.
Second Place winner will receive: Free entry
Third place receive: $20 store credit.

    How to Enter:

RTFR below and submit to us a short story.

Submit to nikita (at) defcon (dot) org. One of the trusted Short Story judges will read it and post it to the DEF CON forums to be shared with the community.

The contest will close on June 20th.

    The Rules:
    -------------------------------------------
    Things you can do:

You may submit a short story, no less than 2600 characters. The accepted format is a .txt file, plain text, no funny business.

You may submit if you are an amateur or a professional, as long as it is a new written piece your chances of winning are equal amongst the crowd.

You may submit if you are a goon or work for DEF CON, this will not give you any advantages. However if you are in a position to judge the submissions you will not be allowed to. For Example: If DT wishes to submit, he may, but he forfeits his right to be on the panel of judges.

You may choose your topic and category, so long as it does not offend as listed in the things you can NOT do section.

You may submit anonymously, however if you are caught trying to circumvent or cheat the system you will be disqualified in a matter befitting a Troglodyte such as yourself.

You may submit as many stories as you wish.

You may use this contest as a way to release your creative energy and as a preventative measure to stop yourself from including "Strange Requests" and links of a questionable nature in your emails to DEF CON staff.

    -------------------------------------------
    Things you can NOT do:

You may not submit a short story currently published or pending publishing. ( Yes,I'm looking at you )

You may not cheat and submit someone Else's work, this includes renaming key names & places of Star Wars and submitting it as new work. You can however go (figuratively speaking) from Pocahontas or Fern Gully to Avatar, and that will qualify as new, if Hollywood counts it so shall I.

You may not submit a vendor or product pitch, you will be disqualified for your shameless distaste.

You may not write statements intended with Defamation, to mislead, hurt or harm another reputation, disclose someones identity, hurt someones feelings directly, etc etc. In other words, don't be a jerk, take your trolling elsewhere....

Pornographic stories are meant to be submitted to hustler & penthouse, to see that your efforts are not misspent DEF CON will send them to your local classified ads, along with the most direct means to reach you, then we shred your filth while we recite an incantation of the litany of filth.

No Derogatory statements towards a mass of people who share similar traits. You can not poke fun at race or religion. You may however feel completely entitled to make up a race or religion and make fun of that all you want. Making fun of Mac Vs. PC Vs. Unix, VS.....well you get the idea. Yeah, that doesn't count, feel free to troll away on your OS of choice, just know your paper does have to be interesting.

    Copyright Information.

By submitting to the short story contest you are granting DEF CON Grant of copyright use, The same grant as when you submit a talk, are a speaker or enter the Art contest, by submitting you agree to the Grant of Copyright Use. Is there a length restriction this year? I'm not looking to write a novel but I'm wondering if there's a particular length I should be shooting for.

Nikita is the last word and she says there is no restriction but as a person who will read and vote for the "reader's choice" story, I would hope it would stick to the length set forth by Edgar Allan Poe.

"Edgar Allan Poe, in his essay "The Philosophy of Composition," said that a short story should be read in one sitting, anywhere from a half hour to two hours. In contemporary fiction, a short story can range from 1,000 to 20,000 words. "

I like to read but I got things to do! :D
