Has anyone made reservations that cost more per-day than what is shown above? If so, do you care to say how much? Also, were the the same "standard" suites that were offered at the Defcon Rate, or larger/nicer rooms?
I am booked to check in Thursday, check out Monday.
$1670 total.
Outrageous price, but a price I am prepared to pay to be on site.
They are gouging pretty heavily. I think my final night was only $59.
Not sure what room I am in, would have to go back and check my paperwork.

You might be able to walk to the nearest harras casino and get a ride to the rio for less than the cost of a cab. See post from BBox:

Yes that is correct. That is what I did when I was there recently and wanted to check out the Rio. When I was there during the week the hotel bus ran on the hour and half hour. I was told on the weekend and busy times its every 15 min.
The website shows they have 10 properties in Vegas (see link below for list) so it should not be a problem to get around on the cheap using the hotel transportation between properties.
A quick check shows that the nearest Harra's property to New York, New York (NYNY) in Las Vegas is "Westgate at Planet Hollywood" which google maps claims is 0.8 miles walking distance from NYNY. This is compared to 1.8 miles from NYNY to the Rio. If you have been to Las Vegas, you know that 0.8 miles outside in the heat is not fun, but between heat and cab fare, it might be worth it to you. Also, walking on the strip has an advantage with some stores along the way to get some Air Conditioning, water, or cool off.

I love how that proudly states "NO RESORT FEES!!!" Well I should hope the fuck not at those rates. Jesus Christ.

At those rates, I would book a room at the next door hotel, "Gold Coast" (Gold's Coast?) for cheaper and walk. I did this one year when we were at the AP, and stayed at the Amerisuites, or whatever it was called, over on the corner. Normally, I'd not complain if rooms were available at the con-hotel, but those rates are close to 10 times more than the prices for Thursday night that other people have been quoted. I know peoplle paying less than $45 for Thursday night at the Rio (though taxes may push it higher.)
Many people booked rooms several months ago when there were Defcon room rates available on Friday and Saturday for cheaper prices than the Rio usually charges, even though Sunday-Thursday was over double what the Rio normally charges.
I would expect players from both sides (guests and the Hotel) will change their rate strategies. Would-be guests will make reservations even earlier, or plan to while looking for deals and discounts, and the hotel will put up a black-out for deals and discounts over Defcon, and start with higher room rates for their non-defcon rates during Defcon week and weekend.
Some side-effect may result. If enough people associated with Defcon stay at hotel in walking distance, and they are organized, it may yield more opportunities for parties in hotels away from the Defcon hotel.

Semi-related question, if you are staying at the Bellagio or another hotel not in the Harrah's family, what's the easiest way to get to the Rio? I'm told walking is pure idiocy, and I've heard rumors that you can just walk to the nearest Harrah's hotel and take a shuttle of sorts regardless of where you are actually staying. Can anyone confirm?
1. Bellagio is not in the Harrah's family, but Bally's/Paris across the street is. Yes, anyone can ride. If you are really nuts, you can walk from Bellagio to the Rio - it's about a 20-minute hike over the freeway - beware - it is way fricking hot during the day, and not much fun dodging the vagrants at night.
2. We need someone to check if the "no luggage" policy on these shuttles includes laptop backpacks. - That could be bad that you get a nice cheap property, but can't ride the damn shuttle because of your gear.

I have not yet seen the Rio rooms but since they are suites I wonder how many can sleep there comfortably. Two beds means 2 people or 4 cozy friends. Floor space in suites ought to be plenty, I;'d think the room would smell like ass before it filled up. Then again maybe there is a MAX OCCUPANCY number on the back of the door. Something to check.
As a note - Rio has a policy to only allow a maximum of 4 people to a room. Be warned in case they actually try to enforce this somehow.
