Just a thought, would getting some of the food trucks in town out for a couple hours a day be something the Rio would go for? I understand this would probably be a huge bone of contention as they want to keep all the money spent going into their casino. It wouldn't hurt to find out if this could be a possibility for next year, since waiting so long to eat made people leave the property, which means those guests are less likely to buy drinks, gamble, and other spendy things at the Rio while they are out and about elsewhere. Slidin' Thru, Fuku Burger, Haulin Balls, Muncheeze, Island Breeze, and HanShikTaco are just a handful of our choices which would in no way be called a roach coach. You will still have to deal with the heat to order and whatnot, but it may help the line situation a bit inside, as well as offer the attendees cheaper/faster food options. Again, I have no idea how this would go with Rio's management, but man, it's worth a try isn't it?

there is as much chance of this happening as there is of you hitting a million dollar jackpot by dropping a quarter into a dollar slot machine.

in some ways, it could hurt. if Jeff or anyone else from DEFCON were to approach the Rio about this, the hotel and casino management might react with such shock and awe that someone would have the lack of sense and gall to even ask the question that they would do lord-knows-what in response.

... possibly deny us the space next year out of fear that we lack the basic level of intelligence necessary to operate things with electricity.

cheaper/faster food options

there are loads of better and faster food options, they involve either preparing in advance by keeping supermarket food in a fridge or cooler in your room or leaving the hotel briefly from time to time.

i, personally, don't like leaving the hotel during the con. i survive on sandwiches, booze, and goodwill.

however, we sent runners to Chipotle and Subway for the TOOOL staff. took them mere moments. also, both the Ellis Island and the Hard Rock are super short cab rides away. i always mention them because they are outstanding options for super cheap, rather fast food. lots of steak and sides with only about a 5 minute and $5 cab ride involved. split that between three or four people and you're gold.

i really would love it if some people (sponsors, companies, etc) chipped in and put together some of the luxury viewing lounges that were discussed on the forums a while back. awesome couches, bar service, etc etc... all with a specific talk being broadcast on a big screen, full sound, etc.

if a room held about 50 or 60 people that way, it would make a great overflow space... provided you had the credentials to get in. (could be anything from listening to a vendor pitch to solving a puzzle, etc)

You mean this WASN'T Done? I intentionally put space on the floorplan for a DCTV room. DCTV had their own staff room for interviews and etc, but there was a room that was set aside for viewing DCTV and overflow talks being shown. It was near the front of the convention area. I remembered the thread you discussed, you brought it up way back, and I set aside a room for exactly that reason, so people didn't have to go to their rooms during a popular talk, or so they could sit and watch a filled up room or the DCTV content. I guess something must have gotten lost in translation along the way. I was not at Con this year as most of you know, so can anyone clue me in on what that room was used for?

Again, Deviants idea is a great one, and I will see to it we have the room again next year if DT is still permitting. It wasn't an uber solution and there would have been slight bickering over what channel was playing, but usually DCTV is pretty good at showing awesome stuff and then when there is an obvious whale of a talk then a vote could be taken to change Chanel. I'd say similar to bar rules when a big game is on.

Also, no sponsors if we can do it ourselves we will, Sponsors can imply a sway in our neutrality. DT Hates it, even if we try to do it small, aside from our content, and on a strickly limited basis, he still really really hates it because it's very risky to get others involved and put their name on something, especially when so many others are doing the work ( The goons, volunteers, etc) He doesn't like the idea of something "Brought to you by: X company when the goons and the volunteers are running it and doing the hard work. Let alone the implication that the sponsor is making the calls or swaying how we do stuff. At least, that's what I've gathered from our discussions, I'm not speaking FOR him in this instance, just reporting what's been said in the past.

Imagine if Trustwaves Spiderlabs sponsored something this year, ( other than their own party) Do you know how much shit we'd get? Trustwave Spiderlabs, had something like 19 speakers or something insane like that, we just picked the talks not realizing that until after, it so happened they are employing everyone right now and swooping all up the worlds hackers with ferocity. We joked ( neil and I) "DEF CON Brought to you by Spider Labs" , I'm not even sure if anyone else noticed, I don't think DT Even realized we had so many.

The point is, if they paid for something like a lounge or an official event, then people could accuse us of accepting those speakers because they paid us. This actually happened a few years ago when we had a metasploit track, even though we had NO Gain from them whatsoever and we did it because the content was good, people liked it, we were still accused of favoritism. It's just not the case. but we do everything we can to remain neutral and free from those kinds of accusations.

I think it's amazing that we have gone almost 20 years holding a convention that has a plethora of content, fun, and antics that last 3 days and all for less than $200 and WITHOUT any corp backing or sponsors. That is beyond awesome results and self sustaining bar, we raised the bar there.

Just so you know, I am looking at a DEF CON 19 MAP that was up at the con and the room (Miranda 1) that your png file shows DCTV Room / Party at night - ended up showing - Q&A P&T Track / Hackerpimps.

Actually that room was used for the Forum Meet and HackerPimps was across the Hall in SE/Party room.
