  • Should I go to DC20?

    Greetings all,

I'm fairly new to the Defcon thread, but I have been lurking on and off for a while. I had a quick question about DC20.

I'm 18 at the moment, and I was wondering if there is any point in me going this year, or if I should hold off till I'm 21 so I can attend the parties as well. Opinions would be greatly appreciated

    Thanks,
    Star6966

Only some parties are Over 21 required. Many are all ages. And unofficial events are either by choice per the organizer. Do not limit yourself by your age. You are an adult and there are many, many other things to see and do at DefCon than drink yourself into a stupor.

18? You should definitely come to DefCon 20.

Thanks for the input. I guess the next project will be trying to work out all the financials.

If your interest to attend Def Con is based on the parties you should not attend. You can party anywhere you are at. Def Con has a few other things going on besides the parties and you may not want that to get in the way of your partying.

Wait, there is stuff at defcon that isn't parties? Shit, I may have been doing it wrong all these years.

So, as others have said, there is plenty to do at DEFCON that doesn't involve drinking. Contrary to popular belief, there are talks at these things every year. Like noid mentioned though, beware the dragon bees... They can smell your fear. I'd say check out the contest and events pages of years past, check out some of the talks in the archives, and make your decision based on that. Remember that attending DEFCON won't make you some kind of leetsauce hax0r, and like you'll hear from anyone, you get out what you put in.

Re: Should I go to DC20?

                  Well, a couple things.
                  1) The dragon bees sound pretty awesome, may be worth going just for them

But more seriously, I would be by no means going simply for the drinking. The undertones of my question were more along the lines of would I be missing out on an important social aspect of the conference. There was some material I was reading that was indicating that the parties were one of the best ways to meet some of the more experienced attendee.

To the leet haxor comment, I have no delusions about that one. Defcon attendance doesn't make one a hacker any more than reading Alt 2600, or running linux. Hackers are defined by their attitude, and the best are the ones who are recognized by others for their ability. I am, in the most generous assignment of the term possible, a script kiddie. There is a good quote that I think is apposite:

"Going to church doesn't make you any more a Christian than going to the garage makes you a car."
I would say the same goes for Defcon and Hackers

                  Cheers

Re: Should I go to DC20?

Anyone can watch the presentations online. The entire value of defcon is the people. Party the whole time (you don't have to drink, just socialize). You'll learn more in 15 minutes chatting with random people than you will in 8 hours of sitting in a chair in a talk room.

that sounds like inviting drama. how does one properly discern professional hookers from the local head cases that advertize with little post cards on the strip? sounds like Dallas has a talk in the making that can help DEFCON bump up the number of "non INFOSEC lectures" if he submits it.

I don't feel cool when I go there. I'm tired of seeing John Mayer's face pop up. I feel like I'm being hustled when I visit there, and I don't think their product is that great. DRM, low bit rate, etc... OiNK it existed because it filled a void of what people want."

Simple: have Deviant dress up in TSA gear again, complete with the gloves, waiting in the room. If she runs, you know that either: a. the bees got her; or b. she probably wasn't a pro.

Dude's 18 man; we have an obligation to help.

Yes, the parties are one of the best ways to meet some of the "more experienced attendee", but definitely not the only way. Hell, walking outside the doors on to the Miranda Patio at mostly anytime in the afternoon/night/early morningish will put you in a position to find and talk to some cool people (as long as you don't mind the smell of cigarettes/smoke). And you also have the DefCon forum meet, which is a great place to meet people (after the goon band plays ).
