  • Crash And Compile 3: THE REVENGE

So you think you can code, eh? And you think you can drink? How successful would you be doing both at the same time, IF you were also being distracted by beautiful geeks of your preferred gender, AND while racing against a couple t-totalers, huh?

LET'S FIND OUT! It's time to start talking about Crash And Compile: DC20!

Assuming Tangent hasn't banned me from the event for making off with his Über badge a couple years ago, and Pyr0 hasn't remembered about the $20 I still owe him (*), chances are that we'll be back again this year. ;-)

TO BE CLEAR: I AM NOT TAKING SIGN UPS YET. That will happen closer to the event.

    The Teams:
    - 8 Compeating teams of one or two contestants each.
    - 1 Sober team, Team Control Group
    - 1 Team Distraction

    The Rules:
    - The 9 Programming teams get an ACM Programming Contest style programming challenge and have 45 minutes to get the correct output.
    - If it doesn't compile, take a drink.
    - If it compiles but doesn't run, take a drink.
    - If it runs but doesn't produce the right output, take a drink.
Lather, rinse, repeat until you can't see the terminal anymore (looking at you, Psychoholics and Fuck PBR) or until they kick us out at the end of the night. Typically, we get about 4 or 5 programs in.

    Scoring is as follows:
    - The first team to get the correct output gets 3 points, everyone else takes a drink.
    - The second team gets 2 points, everyone still programming takes a drink.
    - The third team gets 1 point, everyone still programming is probably drunk already, but they still take a drink.
    - If any Competing team finishes before Team Control Group, they get 1 extra point, and everyone still working gets an extra drink. (Unfortunately, by their vary nature, TCG doesn't get scored.)
    - Any unclaimed points at the end of the 45 minute round go to Team Distraction.

Details to still be determined: How much it'll cost to enter. I'm not here to make any money, but I'm also not going to finance your drinking problem for the night. Entry fees will be to (almost) cover the costs of the event, and no more. Historically, it's been on the order of $20 to $40 per person, but this number depends heavily on several other things that haven't been determined yet. I'll provide more details later.

Any questions? Hit me. I'm looking forward to this again! \m/, >_<

(*) Actually, he technically owes me, but I'm not holding it against him or anything. ;-)

Re: Crash And Compile 3: THE REVENGE

I said I wasn't taking sign ups yet, and I'm not, but there are three teams that get walk-on privs:

    - Frink Rules: Last year's winners get first dibs if they want to come back.
    - Team Psychoholics: As long as you guys bring back the d20 and the PDP-11, you'll always get a walk-on slot. Will we see something new this year? ;-)
    - Team Nepatism: Namniart and Juice, my two former minions for the event (who the fuck am I kidding, they did all the heavy lifting, sometimes literally; do you realize just how heavy a damn PDP-11 is?), have decided they'd rather compete this year.

In other news, anyone interested in helping me run this fucking thing? ;-)

I know I said I wasn't taking signups yet, and I'm still not, but I would like to gauge interest. Who's planning on, or thinking of, registering for a team?

I will definitely be making another appearance. Now whether or not I'll be borrowing someone else's liver is up in the air.

Historically, it's been Saturday Night. I've requested Friday so we aren't up against all the other big name events (though I am honored to be among them) but we'll see there the bones fall this year.

                I'm in. I don't know if I'll find a teammate or not.

I'd like to compete but if you need anything to help run the event (like logistics before, or drunken logistical help afterward) that I could still do while competing, feel free to just ask.

We haven't opened registration yet; I'm waiting until the time gets closer so we make sure to give as many folks as possible a chance. Keep checking back here for updates.

W00t! As I've told SmittyHalibut before, team Frink Rules! (with embedded punctuation) is back in. Crash and Compile was one of the highlights of my everything. This year we'll be using a less-powerful language than my homemade language Frink to give everyone else a chance. LOLNOTRLY.

We are still going to pwn with a language that is no more than, to use the words of Doc Brown, "a shiny bomb casing filled with used pinball machine parts." Yet it's still bettter than the conformist jock programming language that all of you cool guys use to impress cheerleaders. You know you do it. You are all handsome, popular jocks! You use Eclipse and (Python or Perl or Ruby or Erlang or Scheme) and just totally nail the cheerleaders every day. Your language was built by tens of thousands of conformist drones who all look alike, though, and listen to the Dave Matthews Band or have a strange secret affinity for prepubescent European boy bands.

Frink was taped together in my garage by me and a shitload of duct tape and that silicon repair tape which is totally awesome and binds to itself while I listen to the Cure and fix leaking hoses. Frink still rules. We will be sitting in the emo-nerd corner under the tree and h4x0ring your shit like that one cool nerd guy in the movie that ended up getting that one chick because he h4x0red your shit. And that chick is your cheerleader girlfriend. And by girlfriend, I mean hot mom.

By syllogism, Frink thus nails your hot mom. QED.

BTW, I'm interested in the language that Team Nepotism will use. Namniart was judging submissions last year and said, slightly annoyedly, "Your language makes this too easy!" It's the best compliment a language designer could get, and I w00ted loudly, and I hope he uses Frink to beat us, just like that one time that Matthew Broderick "beat" Joshua by making it play against itself. It would make us all learn that nuclear war was bad and that if we were good enough hackers we could Ally Sheedy. It would be like solving the problem where an irresistable force meets an immovable object. (Yes, I've read "The Fall of Colossus.") "Interesting game. The only way to beat Frink is not to play."

I will re-assert that Crash & Compile is the most funnest contest in all of Defcon. It's also the only time every year that hot smart funny women talk to us. (Team Distraction is our favorite thing evAr!) And C&C is the unholy convergence of my only two talents--programming and drinking. Which are best practiced simultaneously. Game on.

Re: Crash And Compile 3: THE REVENGE

Alright, folks. Stay tuned. I'll open up registration in the next few days. Just giving everyone a heads-up that its coming so you can start madly reloading the forums. (Sorry, CotMan; I hope the servers hold up. ;-)

TO BE CLEAR: THIS IS NOT A CALL FOR REGISTRATION YET. It will come in the next day or three.

I'll try not to make an ass of myself again this year, but I'm still very interested in seeing a team of Goons. I'll even go so far as to reserve a spot for Team Goon if I get word that someone might be interested. Let me know.

Getting bumped for the long winded beard growing competition is kind of annoying.

Re: Crash And Compile 3: THE REVENGE

My overriding goal in life is to win the scavenger hunt, so I wasn't going to participate in C&C this year. That said, I'm a founding member of Team Distraction, and the Psychoholics are very determined that I come back to distract them (and the rest of the heterosexual males who compete) I also have an exceedingly distracting little green and black number that I haven't worn outside a fitting room yet. The universe is forcing me return. I think I may have to give in.

I'm still going to win the scavenger hunt though, and do it while giving up an evening to get drunk and play with you guys. Take that all the other scavengers!

                              xoxo
