  • Con Support

Since TwinVega brought it up, how do YOU support your con?

TwinVega, you mentioned that this was your first year going, so how have you supported Defcon? $75? Do you feel that $75 is adequate support for everything that you get out of it?

Do you volunteer any time? Do you participate in any events? Do you run any events? Do you speak to the press, in an attempt to keep the news reports positive? Are you a speaker? Are you a goon? Are you a vendor? Are you a member of a contributing group?

Personal note to TwinVega: Yes, I am singling you out.

No, my child was not an accident, mistake, or result of poor planning. Yes, I chose to breed, and yes, I take full resposibility for that. My husband supports us just fine. However, in times when money is a bit tight, I don't mind relying on the kindness of friends, because I have made my contributions, and I will always return favours. I simply mentioned that a child is a full time job, when done correctly, and that implying somone is lazy without knowing anything about them is something only an asshole would do.

What did I do to make you think I give a shit?

Perhaps I was a little touchy on the whole not paying for the con issue. I now retract my stupid ass coment and add a new one which I think I will not regret as much. As long as the con is paid for by somebody, you should have that pass. I didn't really want to start a whole flame session about TwinVega, but I brought it upon myself and now I have to pay for it. No I don't do any of those things, I did however pay for my badge, I think that is adequate support unless you volunteer or speak, then the badge should be free. I now bow my head in shame and walk away.......:o

      did i miss a fight?
i think that contributing to the con with more than cash is a noble way to show your support. however, i think that finding your niche in the volenteer con world is more difficult than people think. people on the inside can ask others on the inside what they can do to help, but those not yet in the inner social circle of con have difficulty finding things to contribute to. not because their help is not needed, but because there is no one to issue out a responsability to them. perhapse there should be a con job board where ideas, tasks, and responsibilities could be posted or assigned. this iz probably a shitty idea but we all need to do our part.

      Love the Con
      Live the Con
      Be the Con

p.s. TwinVega, dont get too upset at octalpussy's comments. while eduicated and heart-felt, her words are cyanide laced and delivered with the sharpest of tongues.

i learned that the hard way!:)

Awww, KeLviN... I don't remember that... I guess you weren't too terribly stupid. Just goes to prove that with time, all transgressions can be forgiven! I hope it only left cute scars. ;-)

TwinVega: Your biggest error was stumbling out of nowhere and spewing rubbish. Listen and learn from people who have been around much longer than you.

Anyway... there is a big difference between paying to attend and supporting your con. There are thousands of people that show up, pay their admission, attend the talks, and basically let the con happen around them. On the other hand, there are a few hundred people who are extremely involved, who participate in as much as they can, who put together parties or vegas tours, and who do everything they can to make the con enjoyable for themselves and others. These people are easy to spot, as they are barely able to move by Sunday. They are the ones that create the atmosphere, and keep people coming back.

What would Hacker Jeopardy be without the Drunken Whores? What would any event be without any participants? Would you enjoy the con as much if no one was partying?

Defcon has a unique atmosphere, and you can't plan it, buy it, or create it. It comes from the attendees. It comes from Bluknight in his rubber suit, and Pete in his kilt. It comes from the gallon jug of Captain Morgan's at the pool, being emptied over conversations of Red Dwarf and graphics conversion. It comes from people who know their friends only by their screen names, and don't find that odd.

You don't need to be official Defcon staff to make a difference. There is a lot you can do, besides paying your money at the door. Don't be such a wallflower! Contribute to discussions on the boards. Tell your friends about Defcon. Plan your teams for next years events. At the con, participate in events. Ask questions at the talks. Participate in breakout sessions. Buy stuff from the vendors. Don't break stuff. Encourage other people not to break stuff. These are all things that YOU as an individual can do to keep Defcon happening, year after year.

Well so far I've been to one Con, and I supported that by purchasing vast quantities of grossly overpriced mixed beverages.

                Support your local con!

                How we supported the con:

Paid an inflated amount for a room at AP rather than room elsewhere.
Bought all our alcohol at the corner store, telling the owner his place is the official Defcon alcoholic dispensation point.
Brought $400 in swag, depart with $40 in other people's swag.
Left behind clothes and drinks for the cleaning staff.
Paid $100 for a $38 switch and loved every second of it. :)

I must have forgotten about the part that I bought like $150 worth of stuff from the vender area, not to mention that case of Bawls, and corner store supplies.
