I think this terrroism thing is going a bit far, the man that was arrested for taking pictures of a hotel (more info on www.2600.com). So basically I am being labeled a terrorist due to the technology I use, I use boxcutters does that mean I will take over a plane with one?

The very min. I saw the plane hit the WTC; I looked over to a co-worker and told him "say goodbye to freedom, the witch hunt shall now begin..." Geez.. I won't be a bit suprised if farting on a plane is somehow ruled a bio-terrorist act... Face it, the government has wanted to have an omnipoitent hand for half a century. They almost got it during the communist witch-hunt in the McCarthy era, then again in the civil rights era, now they are going to play the best card they could have been dealt. Every petty act of crime is now called a "terrorist act". On the bright side, maybe they will run the phrase in the ground soon and it will lose it's meaing, then perhaps common sense will step into play.

Exactly. During the witch hunt days, they went for anyone that was different, non-conformists, or just off the norm. It looks like history is repeating itself once again..
I have next to no faith in the general public when it comes to what they will be willing to trade over to the government so their Volvos and rotating tie racks will be safe. (Note my signature which I stand firmly behind.)
But what little faith I do have tells me that a backlash is very close to ensuing. However, for the most part, many people don't realize the types of injustices our government is aiding and abetting. At least where I come from.
It just takes a small group of people (i.e. you and I) to get the word out in order for a change to take place. I'm sure that if more and more people began to learn that they can't take a picture of a telephone pole without going to jail for ten years, or they could be labeled a terrorist if they walk down the street with a laptop and a wireless card contained in the same backpack, they would begin to make their voices heard astonishngly quickly. And for the past three weeks, the only thing the media has been reporting on is Michael Jackson's courthouse wardrobe.
If the media isn't going to inform the people, then it's up to us. It won't happen over night. And yes, we will, (and I do mean WILL) be pegged as terrorists for going against things such as the PATRIOT Act, but I have confidence that in the end, the word "terrorist" will no longer be synonymous with words that encourage free thought, education, and creativity.

I agree with Manic Velocity, in that the media side steps many of these issues and instead only talks about what people wanna hear (constant problem with the mediam, I wanna hear about the world in an unbias manner). I go to my little news site www.shortnews.com and hear things that the news never even talks about, or just makes them seem less important. This rasies the question, why didnt the Goverment care about terrorists before 9-11? I feel it is because the Govt doesn't act until there is a huge public outcry for action or its a good way to get votes. I personally feel the rights that our fore fathers fought for are going down the drain. Welcome to the new America, one nation under the Goverment.

I've started walking around the house, mowing the lawn, getting my mail, and driving to work naked just so my neighbors won't think that I have a bomb strapped anywhere to my body.

Operation Tips was attempted, but I think it more or less went over the boundaries that most folks wanted to go; thankfully it did not catch on in full force like the current administration would have liked for it to. (In fact, they have pulled the page. I guess we are not like the Nazis just yet..) Fuck.. there were some folks that were about to spooge over the chance to rat out their neighbors; a guy in one of my college classes from Turkey had the feds visit him because his neighbor called in suspicious activities (he was installing his damn direct TV dish..)
Although this fine program went over like a turd in the punchbowl, it bothers me that it died a silent death as opposed to citizens realizing that this reeks of Soviet and Nazi tactics and causing an uproar. It seems that during this day and age, you can only ignore things and hope they go away; otherwise you run a very real danger of being branded as "Anti-American" and you going away, or becoming "An Unperson" if you will. I personally love my country and would die to keep it free, but I fear a government that has an attorney general whom was quoted as saying "The American Constitution is getting in my way!"
BTW Manic Velocity & BW.. congrats on getting me riled up! Good discussion! (And I'm not even drunk and cranky yet!) :p
