What's interesting is that the Transport Police in L.A. are using them on the newly-opened Gold Line, as well as to get around Union Station. Apparently they're going to expand usage of them out to the entire Metro rail system.

I have to admit that I scoffed at the idea of these things while quietly filing the gyroscopic balancing system under the category of neat. However, having seen them in action, they make a lot of sense. If it weren't for the price tag, I'd honestly consider buying one so that I could use the train to commute to work - I live ten minutes' walk from a station, but as the nearest station to my office is two miles away, walking that twice daily is rather impractical.

This is where the Segway could potentially do quite well: cities with well-developed light / underground rail systems. While it solves the same problem as, say, a bicycle does in this context, it does so in a package that's much easier to manhandle through a public transport system. I speak from experience on this.

There was a controversy here awhile back. This older guy had a segway for mobility reasons and took it on the MAX (lightrail), where some heavy handed tri-met ppl (not sure who specifically) kicked him off. Keep in mind that bicyclists are allowed to get on MAX and there is a special bicycle area for them to stand and be out of the way. They claimed the segway (when stopped) is not safe. Sounds like bull about a new device they don't understand well. OTOH, you would not be able to take a segway onto a regular bus, though you can put your bicycle up on the rack on the front of the bus. We haven't banned them from our sidewalks yet I don't think, though the idea has been kicked around. I don't believe I've seen one here, though I did see one in Seattle when it was known as Ginger, before the Segway was announced.

A little behind the times, dear? The wheelchair was Dean Kamen's claim to fame before the Segway.

before you do that, go here

for vehicle type, scroll down to segway.

it would cost me 137 a year with minimal coverage, and my driving record....
