  • Dead Mac, Need Help

I've been working on doing a 68K Mac port of the 2.4.18 kernel. Unfortunately, my development machine (Powerbook 520c) just took a major crap, halting progress.

Symptoms: powers up, sounds like it may actually be booting. However, the display is *dead*. I've checked for bad connections, etc. with no avail.

Google hasn't turned up a quick fix for this yet, either. Anyone have any ideas?

Mac Supports use of External Monitors, correct?

so... it's running (as far as you can tell) but no video? Any signs of voltage issues?
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

            Memo:

            1) Drop the evangelism spiel. I don't have time for it, nor do I want to get involved in an argument that does not solve the problem at hand.

            2) I run multiple platforms. Intel, Apple, Be, Sun, RS/6000, SGI, NeXT. Most of those are not x86-based. There is a reason for that. Deal with it.

            3) This serves as a development and testbed box for me. I need it to be running for a kernel port I'm working on.

            4) I have no signal on the LCD at all. I'm working on getting something else jerry-rigged to the display (the machine's presently 30 miles away from me, and I don't remember if it has SVGA out or not), but I need the LCD to be working for portability's sake.

Thinking about it, I seem to remember that there was some reason why this machine couldn't be connected to an external monitor.

You could also try finding someone with a similar panel and swapping to see where the point of failure is occurring. Doesn't sound like something that will succomb to magic tricks though..

So very true, right after I posted that I thought to myself that it has been a little overdone, but I decided to just leave it anyhow. I apologize for not being able to help you.

Because he can't get output to an external monitor, my guess would be the videocard.

Assuming that the external isn't possible specifically because of the problem...

                      Thanks, but...

After spending some time with a multimeter on this thing today, it looks as though it's a power issue somewhere. As for what's actually failed, I'm not sure. I'm going to deal with it some more this weekend. Cheers folks.

I dont know what you are talking about. My specialty is linux and some windows suff. Just give up the mac like jetforce4000 said and get a linux machine. It will run faster also.

Specialty would imply that you have a clue in those. Just leave, like we all tried to hint at before you changed names. It will be less painful.
