    intrest in fasTrak?

i was thinking of doing a talk at DC11. i braught it up before, but here's the official vote...

is there any intrest in hearing about hacking fasTrak toll transponders and systems? would any one be able to donate transponders? would anyone like to help with the software aspect of the talk? (i'm a hardware and social person, i hate code)

I would like to know more about it and how it works, like if I had my laptop set up to somehow receive a signal I could see what they see.

I use fasttrack almost on a daily basis, be it that I am lazy, or don't want to deal with traffic... but I reside in fastrack land where it is too tempting not to take over the freeways... I would be most interested in the current models of transponders... frequencies, codes, override codes, camera usage... theoretical and applied... and also in the models that i heard are being used in Northern california regarding using the encoded transponder that allow the data to be centralized realtime to aquire an approximate rate of traffic in any one area at one time... of course it comes in a mylar bag for people who don't want to be tracked....

perhaps some type of working demo would be nice as well... nothing fancy... just something that can show us in a nice detail exactly what transactions go on as a transponder is detected... what failsafes it has... or how to make your own transponder... scan transponder, sniff codes.. etc.. <all for educational and information purposes of course>

also I would make sure to have some type of plan b, full of non-liable information... so you don't use FASTTRACK as a brand, but you use something that cannot be used just in case they send out an agent/lawyer to hear what you have to say about their system... and if you allow vision of circumvention.. :/ .. and that type of bullshit. :D

I remember having a thread.. ah here it is : http://forum.defcon.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=51

You might want to look into how McDonald's implemented it at their drive-thrus. Might be a good source of info.

And I know the fast trak beeps when you enter but it beeps in the middle too, they can calculate your speed this way, I am waiting for the tickets to show up in the mail.

If I hid my transponder where it could not be "seen" for one of the two beeps, would it matter, or does it only need one beep?

hmmm... I don't recall mine beeping in the middle of two points.. :/

all my records indicate is the time the transponder passed through each entry point.

I figured it beeped in the middle in case you used the 3+ lane.

that is another entry point... you made it seem as if your transponder beeped in the middle of nowhere... without anything hanging overheard...

When I enter the lanes and at the 3+ lanes...why two beeps, why not just the middle one? What do they know about us other than our speed?

I don't really think they penalize based on speed, that is what the highway patrol is for... I see them pulling over fastrackers all the time...

                      things they know about you:
                      your speed
                      your license
                      your name
                      your credit card number
your vehicles registered under that transponder
                      your driving patterns
                      your passenger load

... and probably a whole lot more ...

never underestimate the power of large databases...

Ooh, if they use SQL can we upload a virus to the system for a fastrack? I mean, can some bad info be sent or would it simply register as "not found."

I don't have fastrac, but a friend of mine who has it in the Bay Area told me that if they do not pick upt the signal from it they look at the video for the lane to get your license plate number and look it up that way. He drives two different cars, a truck and a sports coupe. I don't know if they charge extra for this, and it may pop up some red flags if you do it too much.
