Just picked up this book from the barnes and nobles... full of 100 linux tips and tricks... also it has a nice hackerism philos built into it.
page vii: How to Become a Hacker (<< it is actually pretty good for the title - great advice for newbies to the world of hacking, or for old veterans who may have forgotten...)

i also go for anything O'Reilly when it comes to books. they are just sorted better for reading right from start to finish, and also seem to be the best for finding what you need on the fly.

i tend to stay away from anything saying dumb or idiot on it as they tend to be writen by the the title.

Think Unix, by Jon Lasser

One of the all time best technical books I have ever read. It looks at the unix-like computing environment as a set of problem solving tools and systematically covers a good portion of them with lots of detail and practical exercises if you can't think of any on your own. I'm not a salesman, just another hacker who happened to like a book. You can pick up a used copy for 6 bucks or so on the net. If you want to page through mine I'll probably have it at the con, if you can find me.
