I forgot I had this on my bookshelf, until today when I needed to sharpen up my shell scripting foo. Its very handy when you got mangle a lot of data.

The Unix and X Command Compendium

I'm not sure if its in print anymore, but if you can find a used copy its well worth it.

As far as Running Linux goes, you can get a copy of the third (not the fourth) edition for $2.38 from Amazon.

            yes they can.

It's not like linux is some secret OS for hackers, there's been linux books at my local Barnes & Nobel since the early 90s.

You're right. But, if Silicon Sin sends me 69.95$ I will send him a Secret Hacker OS and for 45.99$ I will send him a Hacker OS Book.

Thank you all for the great book recomendations. Ive been looking for stuff along the same lines. My favorite computer book would be " Hacking: The Art of Exploitation." by Jon Erickson. Be forwarned make sure you know C++ before you dive into this one! ;)
The only stupid question is the one that you dont ask.
Or the one that ends up in dev/null.

                  I'll throw in my $0.02...

As an aid to understand some of the core parts to the kernel from a general perspective through UNIX source code with comments...

Lions' Commentary on UNIX 6th Edition, with Source Code
                  http://www.peer-to-peer.com/catalog/opsrc/lions.html

(I do not work for the company or have any affiliation with the seller.)

I would expect Linus has this book, as well as the Tannenbaum book on Minix, as both are considered quote good for OS designs.

Neither of these books are for beginners. I value my copies as much as The Art of Computer Programming (v1-3) and Applied Cryptography. (Secret's and lies is also good too, but much of it seems to be common sense like much of The Art of War.

Yes, it is. Also as 0versight said you might want to get a copy of: Linx In A Nutshell

I also like the Pocket Linux Book

[Edit: A had a spelling boo boo on one of my links. Please note linx should have been linux.]

I am personally a fan of Lynx in a Nutshell and it's brilliant written companion tome Pico for Dummies.

Well, this may seem kind of broad but any thing from O'Reilly books. You might check out your local used book store, I've found some pretty cool books in those places (Red Hat 7.1 Bible with the disks BRAND NEW CONDITION = $7.00) Slackware has there own book on the web. And I'm going to tell you what phobal told me; check out your local library.

If you are just looking for some very helpful docs on basic Linux operation check out the Gentoo docs they are not completely distro specific but I find them to be very helpful even if you are not a gentoo user. As far as books, I would recommend Linux Server Hacks, the Linux Cookbook is alright though very basic. I would also recommend The Art of Unix Programming if you are interested in finding out a bit more about how and why most Unix/Linux apps are built the way they were.

                                Purple book

                                You might also check out
"Unix System Administration Handbook" by Evi Nemeth, Garth Snyder etal
The latest version 3 has a purple cover which is why I call it the Purple book.
This latest version has expanded Linux specific sections...you might also check out their book "Linux Administration Handbook". I haven't had the chance to look at that one yet but if it's as good as their other work it should be excellant too.
