  • Win XP dump at bootup?

Hey all, Im a nOOb to the Defcon boards, so any recomendations are welcome! Anyhow, the point.

I have a Dell 8100, 512, 1.5, XP upgraded from ME. All the sudden, (no problems for like 5 months) when i reboot, it gets to the "XP scandisk", and wheather you let it check the disk or cancel, it reboots right after that! Im confused! So, i called a place and they said possibly to defrag it? Oh, Hard drive = 100GB. Anyhow, i havent done that, but any ideas? Problems? Motherboard and hardware aspect is fine, ive run a diagnostic.

    Recovery Console?

I donno, just help me please!

welcome to defcon forums technical support.

It does not sound like a software problem, did you install anything recently, either hardware/software?

It sounds like a drive problem. Are you using *IDE? I hope you either partition your 100GB drive. Either way you better start backing up your data ASAP.

Are you able to enter XP in any other mode, or does this scan-reboot process occur regardless of which mode you are entering?

What File System are you using?
You may want to use a third party utility if you can't boot into XP such as Partition Magic and check the drive for errors. If it finds any fix them and backup your data.

Anyway backup your data, remove the partition, recreate the partition and keep an eye on corruption... if you are not using multiple partitions (at least to separate your data from your system files) you are just asking for trouble... today's drives are not what they used to be with their 1 year warranty crap. If your drive is still under warranty get it replaced before it is too late.

Ok, Im usig FAT32, and have no partitions. (Well, 1 technically).

Safe Mode brings up what appears to be a console, lists the DLLs, then sits.

Hard Drive is about 1.5 years old now, so its not under warranty. If worst comes to worst, i suppose i could just put the drive in another computer.

But, if i got it defraged, then partitioned, how would i just load XP onto the partition?

Man i shoulda just done a dual boot for linux when i got the computer, damm, i miss you Mandrake!

Put in your copy of XP. Boot. Say Install, not repair. It will find the installation of Windows and ask if you'd like to repair this Insallation. Say Yes. It will reinstall all system files, but leave your personal files untouched. Try that.

Irq conflict? Try to get into safe mode somehow and use system restore or recovery, not sure. But restore from a saved point, it should have done that automagically. If not, try and go into your device manager and check if there are any problems.....thank you for calling technical support.

I don't think a defrag will fix the problem....but good luck.

A 100GB drive? That's not stock with an 8100... is it an external or internal? Primary or secondary drive? If internal and not pre-packaged, did you install it, or Dell?

I cannot suggest any installation that includes in past or present, part of the Windows ME system. Not sure exactly how the hard drive actually fits into this, but I would suggest a fresh installation with your XP media. fyi... if it's an upgrade disc, it should prompt you to insert a copy of your 98/ME disc, insert that disc, and it will install a complete copy of XP without copying anything from ME into the mix.
if it gets me nowhere, I'll go there proud; and I'm gonna go there free.

Yea it is, well acually technically its 93 gigs, they call it 100.
Its internal and it came with my computer. It is stock.

(i designed mine on dells little "build a PC" thing.)

this is not in relation to your problem, but something else people should be on the lookout for.
I have a bunch of drives around 60-80 GB in my system booting XP. all of the sudden one day XP starts taking like 5 minutes to boot. bad considering I can normally boot in under 45 sec. I can't figure out whats going on. I run bootvis(the xp boot speedup program from ms) and it tells me it is spending most of that 5 min in like disk initialization. I then go into disk manager, or whatever it is called now, and it says that something is wrong with one of my disks. I try a bunch of things, reformat fdisk to destroy and recreate partitions, finally I give it to my friend with a drive tester. It failed really quickly something was wrong with the drive (and i had just recieved it from WD a few months prev) oh well.

I really think this is just a hard disk issue as I described above... Windows has a knack of going unconditionally into scandisk when there are bad clusters on the disk.

A friend had an XP error, I ran the scandisk at reboot, it went fine until 57%, and it took about half an hour to get to 58%, then it shot through to 100% and was fine after that. Don't reboot the machine while it is working!

If you have something hacked in your system you can also go to www.bootdisk.com and create a new boot disk to start fresh and check out your hard disk from there.

You had a store upgrade it for you? Also Just trash XP its one of the worst operating systems because you have to call microsoft up for a number to install alot of new stuff. You would be better getting everything you need off of it, formating, and swiching to 2000, 98 or linux.
